Jennifer's Texas Country

Dateline: December 2, 2002

Last month I spotlighted Roger Creager (Who has all of his "Fun All Wrong"); this month I will Jason Boland & The Stragglers, a group that is 4/5 Oklahoman and 1/5 Texan yet fits in with every other Texas artist out there today.

The members of the group are: Jeremy Watkins (Midland, TX), Grant Tracy (Vian, Oklahoma), Brad Rice (Edmond, Oklahoma), Roger Ray (Vian, Oklahoma) and the main man himself Jason Boland (Harrah, Oklahoma). Along with great harmonies, the guys play a mixture of fine instruments such as guitar, pedal steel, banjo, dobro, drums, fiddle, and more.

Like most other Texas bands or artists, Jason Boland & The Stragglers write most of their material

which only adds to the fun of listening to the no-holds-barred lyrics and true honky tonk sound. Some of my favorites are "Pearl Snaps" and "If I Ever Get Back To Oklahoma."

Both of those songs can be found on the group's first album entitled Pearl Snaps. One of the most popular selections around Texas is the sing-along "The Drinking Song." In 2001, Truckstop Diaries was released and, once again, the songs took off on the Texas music charts as "Shot Full Of Holes" and "Travelin' Jones" (also on the Texas Road Trip album) made their way to radio.

Even though Jason was seriously injured in an accident shortly before the second album was released, he bounced right back and close musician friends played a benefit to help him pay his medical bills. The kindness of not just Texas artists, but any person in general, was shown when that occurred and it truly made me feel like country artists are some of the most caring and genuine people around the entertainment industry.
