Jennifer's Young Country
line

Dateline: April 2, 2001

Last month I spotlighted Rascal Flatts; this month I will feature Nickel Creek. This awesome group has Sara Watkins (fiddle, voice), Sean Watkins (guitar, voice), and Chris Thile (mandolin, voice) - all instrumental phenoms.

Nickel Creek is a wonderfully talented group of young people. They sound as if they have been playing their instruments and singing together for many decades, although they are only nineteen, twenty and twenty four. They have been together for eleven years already despite their still tender ages.

"Nickel Creek" was released in March of 2000, and has already proven to be successful. "Reasons Why" (their first single) reached number one and stayed there for a whopping six weeks on the Americana Chart, while Country Music Television has "When You Come Back Down" in heavy rotation.

What is great about Nickel Creek is the fact that they are totally committed to what they do, yet can still find the time to do individual projects. On March 13th 2001, Sean Watkins released a solo album called "Let it Fall."

The latest round of CMT's specials called "On The Verge" spotlights Nickel Creek as well as Keith Urban. I thought it was honest of them to say that "When they [Producer] suggested we needed another love song, we told them we did not want one because we haven't had that experience yet."

Honors:

  • Nominated for two Grammys
  • IBMA Emerging Artist of the Year for 2000
