CD Review: In Another World - Joe Diffie

Joe Diffie has been "missing in action" from radio for a long time (about two years) and he has come back to release "In Another World," which is a collection of ten solid songs with one co-written by the artist himself.

Over the course of Joe's career, he has acquired five gold albums and fourteen songs in the Top Ten. Some of those songs include "Pickup Man," "Third Rock from the Sun," "Bigger than the Beatles," "Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox If I Die," and "John Deere Green."

"In Another World" is the first single and title cut and what I think is neat about this song, is the fact that while listening you get the feeling that you are moving through the galaxy as if in search for the World that is mentioned throughout.

"My Give a Damn's Busted" is so packed with attitude that if Joe would not have recorded it, I could see Toby Keith snatching it for his next album. He really wants to care about what is going on but he does not see that happening any time soon. "Maybe Oprah has time to listen," he suggests in one line.

"If I Lost Her" is an amazing ballad in which Joe sings about how he is so lucky to have the wife he has, all the while thinking back to the fight that made her leave. In a bar, he encounters another woman and he says, "You make me think of her and what our love is worth. She's all I'll ever need. I appreciate the drink and thank you for the dance and the chance to see" that if he truly loses her, he could not bear to live with himself.

Even before I heard "Stoned On Her Love," I knew I would love it, if only for the fact that Andy Griggs co-wrote it along with Z. Turner and L. Wilson. "Kick her off, Earl" is said before we hear a little bit of banjo starting off the tune. The man in the song never drinks, smokes, or needs caffeine because she is his only addiction. There is a nice country sound mixed in with a little bit of contemporary to the song and I hope that this one is released as a single.

A young man sings about the death of his grandfather in "The Grandpa That I Know." Seeing him lying there in the casket only makes the boy feel worse because that is not what he is used to seeing. He is used to seeing his grandfather run around a-killing weeds in his overalls and working on the land both the man and his wife owned.

All in all, an excellent album by Mr. Diffie. This is my first album of his and it makes me wonder why I never bought some of his other stuff. Not only does he have producers that could be considered "Big Guns," some familiar Country Artists helped write some of the songs (Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts, Andy Griggs, and Shawn Camp).
