Len Doolin was "discovered" at age 11 by Harold Montgomery. Len was singing "Folsom Prison Blues" in a local talent contest, and Mr. Montgomery was the lead man in the headlining band for the evening. Now, if the name Montgomery is sounding familiar - it is because Harold is the father of Eddie and John Michael Montgomery.

Len is another artist who is sticking to the more traditional country music sound. It was a nice surprise to hear the sounds of true country music coming out of the speakers when I popped in the CD. He is an established songwriter with his own publishing company, Dream Chasers Publishing. His CD is

titled "Once In a Lifetime," and it contains some good music that the country music lover will appreciate. It is released by the independent label, Sunbird Records.

"Breakin' What's Left of My Heart" has him trying to figure out how a woman can make a man so totally crazy. He does whatever it takes to make sure he is around for anything she needs, but then she doesn't treat him like he is special to her. He says "How can she make you fell like you stepped in the ring with Ali?"

"Redneck Relapse" is a fun song. You have a man that has moved from the country into the city and has become a member of the "corporate world." But when he finds himself in some situations the "redneck" in him takes over. "Joe Cool" turns into a crazy fool. He may have left the country for the big city life, but you just can't take the redneck out of him.

"The Promise" is a terrific love song/ballad. He says that if is the last thing he does, he'll keep the promise of loving her. No matter what tests life has for them, his love will be there for her to lean on.

"Heartaches and Honky Tonks" is one of those "drinking" songs that country music is famous for. He is trying to get over a lost love and goes to a honky tonk bar. He soon finds out that it wasn't a good idea. You can't listen to the moan of a steel guitar and forget about a lost love.

"Girl With A Bass Boat" is a funny, tongue-in-cheek song. It has a little bit of the Cajun sound mixed into it. He is just looking for someone who knows how to have fun. He isn't picky - wants to find a girl who'll take care of her man. Someone who'll help him with fixing up his stuff and isn't worried about her nails and hair. She will love him just the way he is.

"She Took His Breath Away" is a ballad filled with double meanings. I'm not usually much of a ballad person, but this one I really liked. He falls in love with a woman who isn't true to him. Knowing he won't be the last one she loves, he turns to the bottle. Lie by lie she takes his breath away.

"Time Flies" is about loving someone to the point of giving up all your things you used to do. He never watches his favorite sports on TV anymore, he doesn't go out with his friends and he says, "I'm much too old to feel this damn young. My the time does fly when you're having fun."

"Heaven Sent Me You" is one of the many songs on this album co-written by Len. John Michael Montgomery also recorded it on his self-titled album. It is a great ballad and love song.

All in all, I really enjoyed this album. With many of the artists bringing in all the electric instruments and turning away from their country roots, it is always refreshing to hear the old country sound. You can hear the fiddles and mandolins on this album - all the electric instruments don't overpower them.
