Garth Brooks Concert Review: Lexington, KY

Dateline: 05/25/98

Garth Brooks in Lexington, KY
Friday, May 15, 1998

What can I say? Garth just seems to get better and better every time that I see him. Not that I've seen him 20 times or anything, but four times is the latest count, with at least two or three more later this year when he hits Vegas, if my GarthLuck holds out.

I'd never been to Kentucky before, and I marveled at the green pastures and white fences as I gazed out of the window of the airplane that was about to land in Lexington airport.

My friend Arlene was meeting me at the gate, and we were to be roommates for the weekend. This would be our first meeting, and the weekend looked to be a blast.. and it was.

But this isn't about my personal weekend, this is about the MAN! So on with the review...

At the time I arrived in Lexington, I wasn't holding tickets for Friday night, so I have to go by GarthLuck and hope that I would be able to buy some when they released seats before the show.

I wasn't going to be too picky at where I was sitting on Friday, since I had 10th row seats for Saturday. Arlene and I ended up with Section 23, which is the opposite end of the arena, just behind the lighting and sound booth.

On Friday night, I wasn't able to get a copy of the entire play list since my pen chose that time to run out of ink. I will say the concert started out with the usual songs, with the exception of "If Tomorrow Never Comes," which was missed greatly. He did sing "Shameless" also. His encore was really short, however, and consisted only of "Ain't Going Down 'Til The Sun Comes Up," "To Make You Feel My Love," which I *LOVE*, and then he went straight to his closer of "American Pie."

A couple of memorable things... When Mike Greenwood was introduced, someone threw a shoe on the stage. When Jimmy was introduced, he got a roaring ovation, since he is from Kentucky. Garth teased him about being the "homeboy," and someone threw some men's underwear up on the stage to Jimmy. It was hilarious.

I don't know if Garth was tired that night, or what. I know the crowd was really into it, and he was amazed at the enthusiasm. He said that we were better than we were the last time he visited.

We went back to the hotel that night high on Garth, and looking forward to Saturday night when we'd be sitting only 10 rows from the man!

Saturday Night in Lexington
Up Close and Personal!!!

(ok, not personal, but definitely up close!)

Half of our group saw both Friday and Saturday night shows, but the other half didn't arrive til Saturday afternoon. We all met and got to know each other in our hotel room, ordered a pizza, and made Garth a special cassette greeting from us, including a song, specially adapted for him.

I won't go into detail here about what it entailed as I've included all that in the My Weekend Experience.

We left for the arena around 4:30, with our green posterboard in hand, and thick black markers and went to the food court in the mall next to the arena to make our signs.

We went into the arena close to 7:00 pm and I'll never forget the feeling of walking down onto the floor. It was incredible!!!

Tonight I borrow Arlene's pen and have the entire play list to share. Trisha was awesome, just as she was the night before. Her set was the same as it was the previous night...

Saturday Night Memories

Some of the things I remember most about the show on Saturday night, other than the fact that I was a mere 9 rows away from the Man...

  • I finally got to hear him sing "Standing Outside The Fire."
  • Even though I got tired of seeing Garth sing "Two Piña Coladas" on his TV appearances, it was great to see him sing it live.
  • "In Another's Eyes" is so awesome in person!
  • Tonight he did the cannons during "Friends in Low Places," and I got a couple pieces of the confetti as a memory.
  • "Which One of Them" was another song I had never heard live, but heard great things about. The great reviews were not overrated. He sang part of this song for some people on the right side of the stage.
  • My very FAVORITE memory was when Garth recognized our bright green signs requesting "To Make You Feel My Love." He came over in front of us and said he would sing it for "You guys." Then he pointed to all six of us, and took his hat off and bowed to us. AWESOME does not BEGIN to describe the way this made me feel!
