Viva Garth Vegas!
Dateline: 08/24/98

Soon the anouncer over the loudspeaker announces that it is time for the crew and band to get ready to go onstage. It is now G minus 5 minutes. The stage starts moving and you see the drum pod start to raise up as you hear sirens and see flashing lights. Then all at once, there is that sweet voice singing, "Oh I said a little prayer tonight, before I came on stage..." and a large white baby grand piano rises up out of the stage with a man in a white tux and hat looking very much like Garth in the "Red Strokes" video playing it.
You think this is Garth, but soon realize you're wrong when Garth rises out of the piano.
We sat behind the stage, so this pic is of the back of Garth's head. The view is just fine as Garth continues to sing "The Old Stuff," using the entire stage. Friday night's play list was as follows:
Garth explains that he has looked for a song for his parents since he started singing and he finally found one that he feels is right. It Was Your Song is that song, and it was totally incredible to hear him sing. It's a really powerful song, and the words really fit how he feels about his folks. This song will be on the LIVE album. When Trisha comes back out after Longneck Bottle, she and Garth sing a brand new duet that they debuted in Vegas. It's Wild as the Wind, and includes a full choir in the background. Another very powerful song! Here are a couple more pictures. You can see many more in the slideshow, and still more in the Photo Album here on the site. Click on the photos below to see the full-size version.
The show seemed really short when Garth only sang a two-song encore. The crowd, while into-it, and fairly loud, just didn't have that super quality to it. What the crowd lacked on Friday, the crowd on Saturday more than made up for. Read about the Garth fans get-together I helped organize at the "Country Star" Restaurant on Saturday, on the next page. |
