With Cowboy Man, Lyle has released his first collection of "Greatest Hits," without labeling the CD that. You see this CD is Lyle's Anthology of his "country" songs. And are they ever country, over the course of these fifteen (15) tracks, Lyle has more steel guitar and fiddle than what is found on contemporary country radio. These are beautiful and graceful, while he's eccentric looking; Lyle's voice is a tenor sound similar to Vince Gill. I am surprised that he doesn't frequent more artists' CDs as a background vocalist. "The Truck Song" is one of two new songs on this CD. This song showcases Lyle's newer style of melding Country, Jazz and Blues together. Simply wonderful, this song is ode to his truck. Too bad radio doesn't play songs like this outside of Texas. "Cowboy Man," more or less the title track to this CD, here Lyle is singing about a beautiful girl who he really likes. She says she likes cowboys and he says he likes Cinderella. He says he'll be her "Cowboy Man." "Farther Down The Line" is a waltz full of steel guitar that talks about a man who will be on the "midnight rodeo" down the line. This is another song about being a cowboy. "San Antonio Girl" is the Grammy nominated single from this CD. No, it wasn't played outside of Texas. About a beautiful girl that Lyle is hoping to be with. He really admires everything about this girl. Of the songs nominated for Male Country Vocal by the Grammy's I hope this song wins. "This Old Porch" is a nice ballad that talks about the fabled country front porch. Here Lyle is eulogizing the porch as a place that was the location of his fondest childhood memories. My favorite on this CD, I think Lyle sounds a tad like Bruce Springsteen on this track. "If I Had A Boat" is an acoustic song that talks about what Lyle would do if he had stuff or was some one like Roy Rogers. This is one of the philosophical songs that Lyle has become known for. On "Which Way Does That Old Pony Run," Lyle is singing about a lost love. In his bluesy style, Lyle sings about trying to find his woman who has just ran off on him, he says she is the only one who can tame him. If you were afraid to ever give a Lyle Lovett CD a chance or just were to skeptical to listen to a CD by the guy who used to be married to actress Julia Roberts, then you ought to give this CD a listen, for it has more country sounding songs on it than some contemporary country CDs do.
