Minton Sparks "Middlin Sisters" is an awesome spoken word CD that paints a very vivid picture of life in the south years ago. Minton is a performance poet who hails from Nashville Tennessee.

"Line Up" is the story of a group of cousins who were caught "playing in the ditch where a neighbor lady had recently landed in a nest of snakes" and are awaiting a whippin' from their Memaw. (Grandma to us non-southerners.) I love the line "I was standin' so close to my criminal cousins we were strangling each other's shadows."

"Trella's Trash" is the story of an almost blind 91-year-old woman who leaves her abusive husband after 65 years of marriage. In typical southern fashion phones are soon ringing all over town and rumors are flying. She's cheating on her husband. She tried to shoot him 10 years ago. We knew he was abusing her still others say, "but she always let him come back home."

"Grace On The 4th" is the story of a southern family getting together to celebrate the 4th of July holiday. Minton's words leave vivid images in my head of children running and playing with fireworks on a hot muggy summer afternoon, ladies flitting here and there drinking ice tea and tending to the food on the picnic tables.

"Mourning The Missionaries" is the story of a woman who is not happy that her newly married daughter is now in Romania doing missionary work with her husband. "She mourns tender times withhHer daughter" Minton intones, a harmonica softly playing in the background.

"If Only, Aunt Sye" details the feel of the earth as you plow, and how the hands hurt at the end of a day of hard work. It tells of the beginning of a courtship and marriage that lead to more hard work and a growing family. It is the story of a garden and farm that fed the family and kept them alive. It is the story of our country and all of us.

"John 3:16 Guest Preacher At Prayer Meeting" includes an awesome acappella version of "Precious Memories" sang by Waylon Jennings. Minton's words and Waylon's singing form a vivid picture in my mind of a southern prayer meeting all fire and brimstone.

I have enjoyed Minton Sparks first album alot, "Middlin Sisters." She paints beautiful pictures with her words about her family, and growing up in the south. I am really looking forward to hearing more from Minton.
