Mike Walker recently discussed the songs on his self-titled debut album. Released Oct. 9, 2001, on DreamWorks Records, Mike Walker was produced by James Stroud and Don Cook.

“Honey Do”: What a rockin' song, man. I love that tune – it's intense and it makes you feel good.

“Stones In The Road”: This is one of the most inspirational songs I've ever heard in my life. When I first heard the demo, I called the publisher and said, “I don't care what you have to do or what it takes, but I want this song on hold for me.” There's a lot of my philosophy of life in there.

This Is That”: This is just a really cool country song.

“Who's Your Daddy”: That one's about women who take for granted the guys who take care of them. I mean, come on – who's your daddy? I love it, and it's awesome live; it's unbelievable the way folks respond to it. When I sign autographs at the end of the show, I always write “Honey Do” on there because it's the first radio track, but lots of times people ask me to put “Who's Your Daddy” on there as well.

“See If I Care”: The chords on this one have a mysterious feel to them, so the song just has that vibe to it. It's also a cool stage song that's a lot of fun to sing.

“What Kind Of Love”: Roy Orbison, who is one of my all-time heroes, co-wrote this song. I love Roy, so anything he did is pretty much on my list of things to do.

“It's Too Late”: There's a place here where I get to sing really high – it's that Roy Orbison/Marty Robbins thing. I like rangy songs like that, songs that give me something I can really work with.

“I Want A Little More”: You know what this one's about: “Baby, you got exactly what I'm looking for.”

“It's Just A Memory”: This song is about the fact that while you hate to say it, everything you've ever done is just a memory. It's kind of overwhelming the way the scene in the first verse builds up and you get to the chorus and think, “Oh, no – it's just a memory; he doesn't have her anymore.”

“Long Long Kiss”: This is a really good love song about a guy anticipating that first kiss and its intensity. It's really fun live.

“If There's A Chance To Say I Love You”: This is the ultimate love ballad. It's a very meaningful song because when you go out and leave your loved one at home, you don't really know if you're ever going to see that person again. If something were to happen, and you didn't say, “I love you” – that's something you'd have to deal with for the rest of your life. I think that's a very deep thing.

“Honey Love Me That Way”: I wrote that with John Adrian and it just turned out great. We wanted the kind of tender ballad you'd sing for Valentine's Day or just to let your wife or girlfriend know how close you feel to her. It's one of those songs people will be able to dance the night away to – a good belly-rubbin' song!

“Rub It In”: This is another one I love to do live because you can extend the bridge, which really gets the crowd going. It always gets a lot of reaction. “Rub It In” has proven itself onstage many, many times.

“Memphis Women And Chicken”: That's straight-up blues. I've played Memphis a lot, all up and down Beale Street, and this captures that whole feeling.
