CD Review: My World - Cyndi Thomson

Anyone who knows me, knows that I usually go for classic country music instead of the newer music. I like to keep myself musically well rounded however, and I am glad that I have had the opportunity to listen to "My World." It is Cyndi Thomson's debut album. Twenty-four year old Cyndi is a Tifton, Georgia native who got her start singing at the age of 7. The youngest of 4 children, she wanted to do everything that her big sisters did.

The title track from the album is a medium tempo ballad that I am just crazy for. It contains possibly the cheesiest pickup line of the decade - "What's it like in your world? Baby won't you let me in? Maybe our worlds can meet again."

"I Always Liked That Best" is a slow tempo tune about memories of a relationship that has ended. I love the soft, breathy way that Cyndi sings this song. I am sure that it is to become her signature style. I hope she doesn't take offense at this... listening to her singing very much reminds me of one of my favorite alternative rock and roll singers of the late 1980s - Edie Brickell.

"What I Really Meant To Say" is the first single release from the album. It has really caught everyone's attention. I love this song! Cyndi's heartbreakingly beautiful vocals, the awesome harmonies and the Celtic tinged instrumental solos really make this song something different and very special.

There has been a lot of controversy about the possibility of rap music invading country music. I say if country rap is going to be anything like Cyndi's song "Things I Would Do," bring it on I will buy it!!!!! I love the way she drawls out this attitude infused song.

"If I Could Only See" is a salute to the unsung hero in a relationship. "If you could only see what I see, you would see the man you wish you could be. Baby you're everything to me."

"I'm Gone" has more of that twangy attitude that I have heard in Cyndi's other songs. The more I hear it, the more I love it. This song has got a bass/drum(?) accompaniment that really makes it something special.

I have really enjoyed this album, and I look forward to hearing more of the music of Cyndi Thomson. Look out Faith Hill and LeAnn Rimes - you have got some very serious up-and-coming competition about to arrive in the way of Cyndi Thomson. Cyndi is off and running musically this summer as her debut album gets released and she opens on several tour dates for Trisha Yearwood and keith urban.
