CD Review: Nickel Creek - Nickel Creek

Produced by Alison Krauss, "Nickel Creek" is a lovely album. With a mixture of calming, yet energetic music, you are bound to enjoy all of the songs. The vocals are not overbearing, which only heightens the emotion and intensity with which Nickel Creek plays.

Most of the songs on the album where written or co-written by a member of the group, which means that along with vocals and instrumentalization, they are also good songwriters.

Five of the songs on "Nickel Creek" are instrumentals: Ode To A Butterfly, In The House Of Tom Bombadil, Cuckoo's Nest, Robin and Marian, and

Pastures New. This is where the group really shows what they are made of. At any place in any one of these songs, you can tell that they know where they are supposed to be, and the mixture of mandolin, guitar, and violin blend smoothly and flawlessly.

"The Lighthouse's Tale" is a story about what is seen through the "eyes" of a lighthouse. The bright lights will always shine, even when the waves are crashing and the weather is horrible. The Keeper of the lighthouse fell in love with a beautiful girl that was full of life. He eventually married her, and every day they would sit outside to watch the sunset. One day she had to leave, and once she got into the water, a raging storm came. The Keeper watched with horror as the woman he loved violentlly crashed against the rocks. The next day, as he buried her, he vowed that he would be with her soon. He then climbed up the tower and ran off the edge and into the crashing waves below. "And the waves crashing around me, the sand slipping out to sea, and the winds that blow remind me, of what has been, and what could never be." Despite its negative content, it is a very beautiful song.

"Reasons Why" was the group's first single and video. It is about the girl being nervous to tell the guy that she doesnt want to be with him because she has her own goals in life. She tries to act comfortable with the situation but she cannot because it is not familiar to her. People get distracted with their own dreams of success yet they also do not want to be lonely.

Next, "When You Come Back Down," (the second single and video) is almost like the guy's response to the previous song. In it, he is saying that you can go ahead and be alone and do whatever you have to, but she should keep him in her heart. Whenever she needs someone to lean on he will be there, when she is flying high in the good times, or falling down with bad times. "Take every chance you dare, I'll still be there, when you come back down. When you come back down."

"The Hand Song" is such a sweet one. It is about a little boy that wanted to give his mom something special so he went out to her garden to pick out some roses. When the boy ran back inside, he had thorns buried deep within the skin of his hands. The mom was not mad at him because she knew he picked the roses out of love; she took the thorns out as the boy cried and afterwards they read from the Bible. "Then seeing a picture of Jesus he cried out 'Momma, he's got some scars just like me!'."
