CD Review: Nothing Personal - Delbert McClinton

Nothing Personal is what Delbert McClinton has chosen to name his first new album in over three years. It is a compilation of 13 original tracks that were all written or co-written by Delbert himself. It is Delbert's debut release off of the independent New West Records label. In this album, contrary to what the title says, Delbert has done what was in his heart - recording songs that meant something to him. While you most likely won't hear any of these songs on a country radio station, anyone appreciating good music will enjoy the album. Delbert has a voice that just makes you want to listen to what he has to say.

"Livin' It Down" is a very up-tempo song. He is saying he is on top of the world and she is doing everything in her power to bring him down. If you go between the lines it is about general life. Just when you think something is going right, something else happens and you have to start again.

"Gotta Get It Worked On" has a bluesy feel. He has been "dumped" and can't seem to get over it. The harmonica is very prominent in this tune. It brings to home how long it really takes to get over a broken heart. He says he is macho and is going to fix it himself - but then he realizes he's "gotta get some help."

"When Rita Leaves" has the Spanish feel musically - I guess it is called Tex-Mex. It is kind of slow and has a ballad feel. He says that Rita has given him every chance a man could want, and when "Rita leaves, Rita's gone." This is a very good song.

"Squeeze Me In" is a very up-tempo song. It relies heavily on the rocking piano playing. It is a song about life today. He keeps telling her that he knows she is busy, but if she would just pencil him in on her busy schedule he knows she would like the results. Everyone is always so involved with getting ahead in life that they don't slow down enough to enjoy what life has to offer.

"Don't Leave Home Without It" is another song with a bluesy feel. She is going on a trip and he is telling her that he loves her and worries about her. He says "you'll have my love with you....and don't leave home without it."

"Watchin' the Rain" is a fun tongue-in-cheek song. He is saying he is his own person. It is not worth trying to go through life pleasing other people. You need to do what makes you happy. It has a neat sound to it. He says, "it's a crime trying to comply." I think it has to be my favorite, just for the message that it conveys.

Overall this was a very good album. It has a style of it's own. I always enjoy the albums where the artists have done the music that is in their heart to do. It shows in their music.
