CD Review: Part II - Brad Paisley

line Part II line

Anyone that thinks that all the new country music coming out of Nashville is "pop-country" will be pleased to listen to this new album from country music traditionalist, Brad Paisley. In it, he continues to display the kind of music that appeals to young and old alike.

The album starts with an upbeat tune, "Two Feet Of Topsoil," that reminds me of "Me Neither" in style. It's upbeat, and has a fantastic instrumental break where Paisley gets to show off his guitar prowess.

The second number, "I'm Gonna Miss Her," shows Paisley's fun side. The story is about a guy who's a big fishing nut, and his girlfriend mistakenly gives him the ultimatum of "fishing or her," and he picks fishing. I was lucky enough to hear Brad perform this live when I saw him in May 1999, and it got a big laugh. I thought he was kidding when he said he was putting it on his next album, but I was wrong.

"Part Two" is a great tear-jerker. Brad sings about second chances... "And we'd fall in love again, and change the way the story ends. We'd bring back me and you, in part two."

"Wrapped Around" is a great honky-tonk song about being so in love that the other person is all you can think about. Brad sings "It's time to put a ring around the finger I'm wrapped around."

The first single, "Two People Fell In Love" is a beautiful ballad about how everyone is here because two people fell in love. My favorite lyric is "I'm glad your dad could not resist your mama's charms and you exist, all because two people fell in love."

"You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" reminds me of something Hank Williams Sr. would have sung. The pain in his voice is so evident. This is a great song right up to the very last note.

The coolest song on this album has to be the instrumental, "Munster Rag." This song totally rocks!

"You Have That Effect On Me" is recorded in the Nashville Sound style with a Chet Atkins-sounding guitar riff and the lush string arrangement.

"Too Country" is another favorite where Brad has some of his idols singing along with him. George Jones, Buck Owens, and Bill Anderson all have parts in this touching song.

The final cut is an acoustic version of Brad singing "The Old Rugged Cross" on the Grand Old Opry. This is my favorite gospel song, and Brad sings it beautifully.

Brad has another winner on his hand with this album. No sophomore slump here. Do yourself a favor and pick up this album. You won't be sorry.
