CD Review: A Pretty Good Guy - Chris Knight

line Chris Knight - A Pretty Good Guy line

Chris Knight is one of those Texan singer/songwriters that I absolutely love. Sometimes while listening to an artist's album you never get the feeling of honesty and heartfelt emotion but with Chris Knight's "A Pretty Good Guy," a person would sense a rather deep connection and a bearing of his soul.

His first album (self titled), netted major airplay around Texas with such songs as "It Ain't Easy Being Me" (which John Anderson also performed on his "Nobody's Got It All" Disc), "Framed," and "Summer of 75."

"Becky's Bible" is a song about a man that is wanted after a gambling game turns to flying bullets after another accuses him of cheating. He is running to the swamp that he feels so familiar being on since he lived there once before. The guy never would have thought that he would shoot a man, so he wonders if Becky's Bible is in the glove box because he says "I'm sure gonna need it if that boy dies."

"Oil Patch Town" is a tale about the small town life and just how boring it can be. In this rockin' country tune, the boys cruise around with a six-pack and spot a beautiful girl sitting in Billy's Camaro. After Lyndall winks at her, Billy decides that they will have a big fight in the cemetery since a cop car drives by and they do not want to get caught. "Billy says, 'Let's get it on'" and then Lyndall slugs him. The Sheriff pulls up and stops them after only that one punch, but at least now they have something interesting to talk about on Monday.

According to the excellent, very well written story song, "Down the River," you better learn that there are some people you just do not mess with, especially if you want to keep yourself alive. An eighteen year old and his twenty-one year old brother (named Walter) went down the river to go fishing and run their lines when, all of a sudden, some drunk guys sped past their boat and shot Walter. Everybody figured that he drowned since they never found the body, but the eighteen year old knew what happened and had heard Wilson bragging around town. In order to get back at Wilson for killing his brother, he got back onto a boat and floated down to his place and shot him in the head. All of this happened because of a fight that resulted in Walter knocking Wilson through the pool hall door.

Those of you that are familiar with the "Black Dog" soundtrack might recognize the title, "Highway Junkie." This song was written by Chris and has been played on various radio stations around Texas, although it was performed by none other than Gary Allan on the above-mentioned soundtrack. The song is about a truck driver that wants the rubber wheels to "rub [the memory of] her off his mind." The driver concentrates on the passing white lines instead of the old flame he left behind.

"The Lord's Highway" uses truck driving analogies for the subject of the song's own salvation. He says, "I used to pack an old switchblade, had a pistol in my coat and now all I got is this good book. The only weapon I tote." The man realized that the path he was taking was not a healthy and safe one and that he needed something greater in his life. Once he found God he knew he was taking the right "road" and whenever a time of sickness comes, he will not fear death.

Since this is Chris Knight's second album, I am very pleased that he has not decided to abandon the songs that are not very "Politically Correct." These twelve songs range anywhere from shooting a man to how believing in the Lord is the best thing of all. I hope that people will not let these subjects scare them away from getting this fantastic album; it helps us remember that life is not exactly perfect all the time. There are all kinds of people out there in the world with different kinds of lives, and not all of them are glamorous.
