Rascal Flatts Interview (October 28, 2002) | |
|
Rascal Flatts self-titled debut album came out in 2000, and has since gone Platinum. Their sophomore project, Melt, hits stores on October 29th. While they're busy on the road, they kindly took time out to answer the questions of your AboutCountry staff. See what they had to say below.
1) For all those new fans out there that may not know much about you and how you started, can you tell us how you met, and how you came up with the name Rascal Flatts?
2) The video and song that you did for the Disney Movie, The Emperor's New Groove, was really cute. How did you come up with that and get the opportunity to perform it?
3) While your debut album had cuts co-written by Gary and Jay, "Melt" has a song ("Shine On") co-written by all three of you. What was it like to write a song together? Was this the first song all three of you wrote?
4) What was it like co-producing "Melt?"
5) How many songs did you have to go through before you found the 11 that ended up on the final album?
6) What is your favorite track on "Melt?"
7) Did you know that "These Days" was going to be the hit that it is when you
first heard it?
8) You have had a couple of songs that have done really well on the charts now, has this affected your lifestyles in any major capacity?
9) How is recording "Melt" different than when you recorded your debut?
10) Is there any goal that you would like to reach with "Melt," that your debut album didn't attain?
11) You guys did a great duet (sextet?) with SHeDAISY for their Christmas project from Lyric Street. Have you thought of doing something with them
again?
12) What's the best thing about being on the road? Worst?
13) What's it like being on tour with Toby Keith?
14) When you aren't touring or recording, do you three still spend a lot of time together, or do you kind of go your separate ways?
15) What's your favorite song to sing live?
16) Which video was the most fun to make? Any stories you want to share about making any of them?
17) What was your most embarrassing moment onstage?
18) Any more soundtrack projects in Rascal Flatts future?
19) You guys always seem like you are having a blast onstage and backstage, what is your secret for not getting on each other's nerves since you spend so much time together?
20) When you are not on the road touring, what do you do for fun?
21) I noticed a couple of you guys have had your songs recorded by other artists. How does it feel to have another artist cover one of your songs
that you wrote?
22) What would you like to say to all the fans out there reading this?
Gary & I are cousins. Joe Don and I played with Chely Wright. As Gary & I were working shows in a club in Nashville, one night our regular guitar player could not make it so I asked Joe Don to join us. Well, it was magic. We knew then we had to do something together. - JAY
Our record label is owned by Disney and we were also fortunate enough to have Sting like our record. He actually called and asked us to perform "Walk the Llama, Llama" for the soundtrack." - GARY
This was the first song we wrote together, however that was 2 years ago. We wrote it in half an hour. - JOE DON
We really wanted to create some new music. We were lucky to be able to block some time off on the touring schedule to do this. When we recorded
our first record we had to do it between touring with Chely Wright, (Jay & Joe Don) and a radio promotion tour. It was nuts. - GARY
We searched thousands of songs to come up with the final result. We even dropped a song we had all three written to include "These Days." It came in to us after we had finished recording but once we heard it we knew we had or do it. - GARY
Our favorite on the record is "My Worst Fear" We wished we had written it ourselves. - JAY
Absolutely! - JOE DON
We are very busy, thanks to the fans! - GARY
We had time off to record, it gave us the option to co-produce and Jay and Joe Don played on the record. - GARY
Mega Platinum! - JAY
We are open to that. - JOE DON
We get to play the music we love and see our fans. Being away from family is the hardest part. - GARY
He treats us like we are the headlining act! - JAY
We spend so much time together on the road and for promotional tours, we like to enjoy our families when we get a break. - JAY
Too many to mention. - GARY
Making videos is very tedious. We loved the "I'm Movin' On" video. - Gary
Not going there. - JAY
Hopefully. - JOE DON
Respect. - GARY
We are normal people, we do normal things. Just being at home and sleeping in our own beds in exciting. - JAY
The biggest compliment a writer can have. - JAY
It is because of the fans we are having success. Thanks, and see you at the show! - GARY, JOE DON & JAY
