I have been a big fan of Raul Malo's band, The Mavericks, for a long time. However, when I heard that he had a solo album in the works, I really was not that sure what to expect. This album is the best album I have listened to in a long time. Raul Malo is the most talented musician/singer to have come along in years. This album is a hot tamale of Latin rhythms, classic country, pop and western swing. Raul continually amazes me with his musical versatility.

"Today," the title track from the album, has a bouncy, energetic happiness to it that is highly contagious. I don't know how anyone could listen to this song and not want to get up and dance.

"I See You" is the sad story of a relationship that is ending. "Where was I when you forgot about me? Was I with you right there in the room, did it happen overnight or just a little at a time?" Raul mournfully intones as the Latin beat clicks on briskly behind him.

"Every Little Thing" has a slowed down moody beat that has a sexiness to it. Raul has said that this is what Led Zeppelin would sound like if they had recorded a Latin song.

"Are We Almost There" is a slow moving, almost pop-style tune. This is the one song on the album that really has a Mavericks feel to it.

"No Preguntes Tanto" translates into English as "Don't Ask Too Much." "Yo soy culpable no voy a fingir. Que mi silencio no te haga sufrir. Soy callejero, pero primero. Yo vivo enamorado de tí." Translation: "I'm guilty and that will never change. I hope my silence doesn't make you suffer. I¹ve been a player before, but now I live in love with you."

I have had a lot of fun this last year or two with my very basic knowledge of Spanish. It is a lot of fun to hear the songs in one language and then find out what they mean.

"Two To Tango" is a very hot duet featuring Raul and one of my favorite female singers, Shelby Lynne. "There are a lot of things you can do by yourself," they sing flirtatiously back and forth, but it takes two to tango. Two to do the dance of love."

"I Said I Love You" is an awesome four minutes of music. Raul says that this is the song he would want for his encore at the Mirage in Las Vegas. I can just see him and the band wildly arrayed, the girls bedecked in sequins and feathers, sashaying around them. This would be a really cool song for them to have a video for. It would be hilarious!

"Let's Not Say Goodbye" is Raul's crowning masterpiece on this album. I LOVE this song. The emotional quivering of his voice in the high points of this song has me reaching for my box of Kleenex every time I listen to it.
