On Saturday, April 28 our family drove from Central Florida to Geneva, Alabama to see Ronnie Milsap in concert at the River Festival there. This was my fourth Ronnie Milsap concert since December and I have to say that I have not seen the "same" show twice. With 40 #1 hits to choose from, it isn't hard to be a bit diverse. He sings the same basic songs - many long time favorites of his fans, but changes around some of the other songs, so you get an idea of just how diverse his talents really are.

Ronnie came off the bus at 3:30 pm ready to give his fans a show. One of Ronnie's band

members, Rhonda Hampton, opened the show for him. She has a phenomenal voice and definitely gave the crowd a taste of what was to come. It was an outdoor show and the lawn was pretty well packed with people in lawn chairs.

Ronnie has a unique ability to connect with his fans and conversed with the audience while giving them what they came for - great entertainment. He has a few funny stories about his years in the entertainment industry and had the crowd laughing frequently. One of my favorites is the story on why he chose to make the piano his instrument of choice. He had decided to play guitar while on stage when he first started doing the nightclub routine. He set his guitar down for a while, and then couldn't find it when he needed it. At that point, he decided the piano was for him. If nothing else, he would bump into the thing and find it.

He opened the show with "Prisoner of the Highway." He continued on for about 90 minutes, ending it all with an encore of "Honky Tonk Women." In between was nothing but awesome entertainment. He took a breather in the middle, while Rhonda performed an old Patsy Cline tune. He mentioned his website and the group of people who go in and chat with each other. They are his "Milsap Cyberfans." He acknowledged the fact that there were a couple of his Cyberfans in the audience. Since I was one of them, that was a very neat thing to be recognized.

Along with his hits he performed some "Street Songs" with Adam, Rhonda, Warren and Jamie. They perform a set of songs completely acapella. This is one of my favorite segments, it is reminiscent of the Barbershop Quartet sound - terrific harmonies. Warren kills 'em with his deep bass. The audience really gets into it. He also did a "Piano Men" segment, paying homage to some of the great piano players. He comes complete with special effects....rocking around his bench to Ray Charles' "Georgia," and sitting on the keyboard as a finale to Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On." When he sings "Kawliga," he holds a note so long people are sitting on the edge of their seats going "breathe, breathe..."

This is the first show I have seen him do an encore. He did it in response to the standing ovation from the appreciative audience. One thing about Ronnie, he responds to the audience. They were appreciating the fact he was there, and he gave it his all. It was a great show.
