I am always looking for some new classic artists and albums to listen to and I am glad I got San Antonio Rose because I found an artist that I had not really heard a lot of material from - Ray Price. He and Willie compliment each other so well on these thirteen tracks and the whole production sounds smooth and seamless.
Widely known as a Bob Wills song, Ray Price sings a wonderful version of "San Antonio Rose," with Willie accompanying him on the chorus. San Antonio will always hold a special place in the man's heart because that is where he met the love of his life that he will never be able to forget. "Broken song, empty words I know, still live in my heart all alone. For that moonlit pass by the Alamo, and rose, my rose of San Antone."
There is not a man big enough to stop Ray Price and Willie Nelson from loving the objects of their affections in the up tempo "I'll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)." Though they are unsure that the ladies love them, they declare that no matter what they will be there ready to hold them should they ever want them to because forcing a relationship never works and leaving the decision to the ladies would be the best thing to do.
Patsy Cline does a wonderful version of "I Fall To Pieces," written by Hank Cochran and Harlan Howard, but Willie Nelson adds a different perspective, which is that of a lonely male showing his vulnerability instead of serving up a constant rough and tough image. Forgetting that the couple never met is not an option because he was so emotionally attached to the lady and every time he sees her he feels like breaking down and crying.
"This Cold War With You" is an excellent tune about love that is not easy, which leaves the man wondering why couples like them even fall in love if it is going to be such a big fight all of the time. Instead of being happy when the sun goes down like a normal couple, they face yet another battle. Instead of going on with the conflict, the man suggests that maybe they should call it quits because he cannot stand it anymore.
"Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away" is so full of emotion that even the lonely sounding harmonica tells a story of its own. Willie and Ray talk to a former flame and they say they are doing okay even though it seems like only yesterday that the hurt and sorrow were filling their hearts.
Though you may not particularly enjoy the "Night Life," in this bluesy tune, when you are trying to get a feel for the music you enjoy, it is something you have to go through to make it your life because if you do not, the other dreamers may fill up your spot and then you would be back to square one. "Listen to the what the blues say" is what Willie wants everyone to do.
If you are a fan of Willie Nelson, Ray Price, or both artists then this album would be an essential for your collection. From slow paced, to up tempo, and even a blues song, there is a little bit of everything on San Antonio Rose.
