Knock On The Sky is SHeDAISY's sophomore album, and in keeping with how their debut did, it should go pretty far and be successful for the sisters. Oldest sister Kristyn either wrote or co-wrote each and every song, and her gift of wonderful lyrics really does shine through on this release. Marcus Hummon, Trey Bruce, and pop-star Richard Marx were co-writers that collaborated with her on a few of the songs.
"Mine All Mine," the song that replaced "Get Over Yourself" as the first single from Knock On The Sky, is a gentler re-introduction to the sisterly trio and their eclectic vocal arrangements. The tempo starts out rather slow and works its way toward being a little bit faster as the girls sing about it being their time to crawl, since they were the ones that made the mistakes in their relationship and they cannot blame their hurt feelings on anyone else.
The ultimate song that gets its message across clearly, "Get Over Yourself" is something anybody would feel right after a breakup, and a bad one at that. Instead of letting the situation upset them to the point of sadness, though, the girls just want him out of their life so they can move on - they do not want to waste any more of their time thinking about the jerk that was kicked out. The perfect "kiss-off" lyrics could be found in such lines as "You think I under-rate you, I think I finally had it."
Written by Kristyn Osborne and Marcus Hummon, the beautifully tender ballad entitled "Rush" truly showcases the sisterly harmony and tenderness with which they can all sing. This song is the complete opposite of "Get Over Yourself," in that the beautiful lyrics are about feeling all of the wonderful facets of love - whether it be the excitement of a kiss or forever holding your loved one in your arms.
With an upbeat bluegrass/gospel sound to it, "Repent" is about coming clean about the bad things you have done, and becoming a better, more energized person for it. When you feel like you have lost your soul, there is only one thing that will make everything right again, and that is to confess and start again. At the end of the song there is a preacher talking about getting down on your knees and then Kristyn keeps singing "Have I really lost my soul?" and "Repent" repeatedly.
Loving people for all of their character traits is the topic in the funky tune, "Turn Me On." When you have true love, that means loving the bad parts of a person as well as the good ones, as illustrated in the part of the opening lyrics that say: "Some days I'm frightful or awfully delightful, the consummate extremist. But you say, grinning, that you're okay with all the trimmings." The one and only thing the girl is wondering is why he is waiting to go all the way and be in a full-fledge relationship when he had said that everything is just fine minutes before.
If you keep listening past the last song, you will hear a surprise bonus song from SHeDAISY that starts with a knocking noise and then a man saying "Here are the thrill-seekers" before the girls break into an R&B/rap influenced song that is, more than likely, called "Knock on the Sky." Although not country in the slightest, this tune does showcase a different side to the group. To close up the album the same man that introduced us to the song says "Thanks for being with us tonight. We hope you come back often."
If I had to choose an overall theme for Knock On The Sky, I would say it is an album reflecting changes that the members of SHeDAISY have gone through. From finding love, being in love, and going through a breakup, it is all here neatly packaged into a neat little bundle of thirteen different songs. In a way, the SHeDAISY sound remains generally the same, yet they have also moved on and are trying something a little bit different, and softer to some extent. This album is another release that can get you dancing around and contemplating life with the one you love, and fans are sure to love it.
