On Saturday, September 1, I had the pleasure of seeing Sons of the Desert in concert for the first time. They were at Silver Springs Attraction in Silver Springs, FL. This energetic young band started out as a group of college students having a good time in the early nineties. By 1993 the band had evolved to what we see today. It includes brothers Drew and Tim Womack and Doug Virden. They played the club and party scene before signing with Columbia and releasing their debut album in '97. Their latest single, "What I Did Right," is fast climbing the country charts.

Sons of the Desert

The guys were dressed in jeans and casual shirts. They took the stage at 2:00 pm with Drew establishing a quick and easy rapport with the audience. While not packed, there looked to be a couple thousand people there to enjoy the show. It was very hot and humid, but the fans were loving every minute of their time on stage. They have an incredible ability to blend their voices; creating some harmonies that make you sit up and take notice. There were even a few couples dancing on the lawn to some of the slower ballads, and swinging to the upbeat tunes. Drew mentioned stopping at a local night club the evening before - which brought some cheers from some audience members familiar with the place. They used the popular song "Ring of Fire" to introduce the band members.

Along with their singing talents, Drew showed off their sense of humor as well. They were a part of Lee Ann Womack's mega hit "I Hope You Dance," and sang their harmony portion of this song.

After the short verse, Drew said, "Ladies and Gentleman, our good friend - Lee Ann Womack!!" and extended his arm towards the backstage area. After waiting for a minute, he said, "You know, she hardly EVER shows up!" This generated some good-natured laughter from the audience. After finishing their set, the guys went ahead and signed autographs for about 30 - 40 minutes after the show, posing for pictures with their fans.

Here is a list of the songs they performed:
