On Saturday, March 24, the George Strait Country Music Festival kicked off the tour in Tampa, Florida. This year the tour includes Asleep at the Wheel, Sara Evans, Brad Paisley, Lee Ann Womack, Lonestar, Alan Jackson and of course George Strait. It is a very impressive collection of artists in one venue. My only complaint about this show would have to be that there is too much happening at one time. Straitland is bustling with all kinds of different activities - food tents, carnival type games, an autograph tent, a stage where different talents are playing (including BR-549)

and of course the concert merchandise. This is all happening while the main acts are performing. There is almost no way to see everything without missing something. It is an all day event, so definitely go planning accordingly. Take lots of sunscreen and a hat. One of the most impressive things to me was the fact that the shows started on schedule. Very organized.

The show started at 1:00 pm with Asleep at the Wheel. We missed them as we were still trying to find our way into the stadium. I did get to hear some of the show and caught bits and pieces on the large screens above the stage. I have always enjoyed Asleep at the Wheel and was disappointed I missed their show.

Sara Evans was next onstage and she wowed the crowd. Her son was onstage also, sitting with someone and watching his mom. She has an extraordinary voice. The first three acts were only onstage for about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes each. Not nearly long enough. Along with a few other songs we heard "No Place That Far," "Born to Fly" and her current single "I Could Not Ask for More." I truly enjoyed her set.

Next up, was a big fan favorite, Brad Paisley. His stage entrance was accompanied by the screams of many female fans. He had a good rapport with the audience with his down home personality and fun sense of humor. Among the songs he performed were "Me Neither," "Who Needs Pictures," "He Didn't Have to Be," "We Danced," and his current single from his upcoming album, "When Two People Fall in Love."

After Brad, the stage was ready for Lee Ann Womack. She also received a warm reception from the crowd. Among the songs in her set was the fun "I'll Think of A Reason Later," her big hit "I Hope You Dance," and her current hit "Ashes By Now."

Lonestar was next onstage. Their set lasted for about an hour. I missed a good share of their show while walking around Straitland. The part that I caught was incredible. They are an excellent group. We heard "Tequilla Talkin," "No News," - which has always been one of my favorites from them, "You Walked In," and of course their hit "Amazed." They left the crowd wanting more.

That set the stage for the next two performers - Alan Jackson and George Strait. Alan came out with a 90 minute set. He was great as always. Wearing his trademark tight jeans with a hole in the knee, red cowboy boots and a shirt that he doesn't bother to tuck in, Alan set up a stir with his female fans. The crowd was on its feet when Alan came on. He sang many of his hits including "Chattahoochee," "Don't Rock the Jukebox," "Midnight in Montgomery," "Mercury Blues," "Livin' on Love," "Summertime Blues," "Gone Country," "Little Bitty," "Who's Cheatin' Who," "Gone Crazy," and his recent hit "www.memory." He had the crowd dancing in the aisles.

After Alan left the stage they set up for the eagerly anticipated George Strait. He came onstage at 8:30 for a full two hour set. It is easy to see why George is so well-received by his fans. He doesn't put on a huge stage production, but just does what he does best - sing. There isn't a lot of chit chat with the crowd, he just goes about the business of giving the fans what they want to hear - great music. He was impeccably dressed as always, nicely tucked shirt, starched jeans, boots and his hat. He sang a variety of his hits, such as "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind," "The Fireman," "The Chair," "All My Exes Live in Texas," "Ocean Front Property," "Baby Blue," "So Much Like My Dad," "Heartland," "I Cross My Heart," "The Love Bug," all the way through his recent hit, "Don't Make Me Come Over There and Love You." There were so many more, too numerous to mention them all. The highlight of the set was Alan coming back on stage in his sweat shorts and tennis shoes to sing "Murder on Music Row" with George. The crowd brought George back for an encore of two songs after which he spent about 20 minutes signing autographs for the people that were down front. That in itself was very impressive.

I would recommend checking out George Strait's Country Music Festival if given the opportunity. You will definitely not go home disappointed.
