CD Review: How Do You Like Me Now?! - Toby Keith

line Toby Keith - How Do You Like Me Now?!
line

How Do You Like Me Now?! is my first Toby Keith album. The album was release in 1999, his first on the DreamWorks label. It has recently gone platinum, selling over 1 million units.

Toby has released four singles from the album, the first being "When Love Fades," which didn't chart very well. But with the release of the title track, Toby was on his way! "Country Comes To Town," was the third release, and the current single, as I write this review, is "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This." Both the title track and "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This" made it to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, and "Country Comes To Town" peaked at No. 4.

This album is packed with both upbeat songs, like "Country Comes To Town," and the title cut, as well as some wonderful ballads like "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This," "Do I Know You (Bottom of My Heart)" and "When Love Fades," as well as some great mid-tempo tunes, like "Blue Bedroom," and "Die With Your Boots On."

"Blue Bedroom" is a song about longing for the one that left you behind. Toby sings "In my blue bedroom, I've got a sad and lonely view, of a melancholy moon."

"New Orleans" has an interesting storyline where a girl drives into town and gets involved with a local boy. She was from New Orleans, but she doesn't talk about her past. As the song continues, they get married and have some kids and a stranger comes to town one day wanting to take her back to Louisiana. The girl says "How dare you even speak to me after everything you did..."

"Heart to Heart (Stelen's Song)" is a beautiful song that Toby wrote for his song, Stelen. "Now he is just a chip off the old block. Just like me we keep her on her toes a lot."

"She Only Gets That Way With Me" talks about the side that the woman shows only to her man. "Until those nights she comes and tells me that the want to in my eyes gives her butterflies. She only gets that way with me... Thank God she only gets that way with me."

My favorite song on the album would have to be "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like That." I just love the tenderness in Toby's voice as he sings it. If you've seen the video, you'll see a humorous treatment of the song. He didn't play it straight, but gave it a funny twist.

I'm hoping they'll release another single from the album, and if so, I hope it's "Hold You, Kiss You, Love You." This is one that you can't help but sing along with you. Romantic, yet not a ballad. "Warm tangled sheets in the dark of the night. I'll wake you up in the sweet mornin' light when I hold you, kiss you, love you."

Toby is currently recording for his next album, and if it's anything like How Do You Like Me Now,?! it's bound to be a smash hit.
