"New Money" tells the tale of a guy with newfound riches and a few girls that become "interested" in him. He knows they like him for his money but he does not care (he is glad to get the attention he would not have otherwise). In order to keep the ladies, he buys extravagant things such as a jacuzzi and expensive jewelry. "Lady luck gave me something my daddy never could, so come on honey, love somebody with new money."
Spending time by the phone in "Too Busy Missing You," he longs to hear her voice on the line because he thinks she'll perk him up, and help him to not be so depressed. He walks around and waits and does so even though (deep down) in his heart he knows the phone will never ring.
In a cover of Albert Hammond's "It Never Rains in Southern California," Trent sings about a man that decided to fly to California to try to find fame and fortune. Once he gets there, he realizes that his goals were hard to come by and that you either have "it" or you do not. If you are lucky enough to have "it," then your luck rains down, while if you don't, it will not rain and your life becomes so dry that you wish you never would have gone there in the first place. He is broke, down on himself, and hungry so he decides that he wants to go back home.
"I'm Country" is about an eighth generation farmer that grows his own food and has chickens roaming around by the house. Whenever he goes into town the people stare at him and his torn and tattered clothes but instead of getting angry about it, he says to himself, "They might think I'm worth a dime, but they can keep their money and I'll take my time. Because I'm country as the day is long." Even when this man dies he wants "I'm Country" to be written on his grave that is within the hills of his farm. This song has a "Rockin' Honky Tonkin'" ending that I love to pieces. Before the next song plays you can hear a dog bark.
In the next song, the singer wonders why "Colene" is being so mean to him. She comes into the bar flirting with him, yet she manages to never give him a second look. They eventually get together and then she leaves him right away to go flirt and play the same game with another man (after she has lost interest in him). "Why you gotta be so mean, Colene?"
"The Beat Don't Ever Stop" is a favorite of mine; between the prominent drums (especially in the intro, but heard throughout) and guitar, you have the fast-paced "When-does-Trent-take-a- breath?" vocals. The song gives us a glimpse into the life of a musican; it is all about having to put your emotions on the backburner while going out giving interviews and performing. It does not matter if you are having problems, you are expected to put on a "game face" and go on with your business like nothing is happening.
"Starletta" is one of the few mid tempo songs on the album. He wished on a star that she would love him. "Starletta, shine your heart on me. Starletta, when I see it I'll believe."
