Cowboy Sound: Gene Autry & Roy Rogers
Hillbilly or Cowboy?
While many performers didn't like the word "hillbilly," thinking it was loaded with negative stereotypes, the word "cowboy" implied romance, bravery, and survival on the open range. By the mid-1930s, many artists included fringe and cowboy hats as part of their wardrobes.
Songs of popular cowboys such as Roy Rogers and Gene Autry and the Sons of the Pioneers were popular in the 30s and 40s when American had an obsession with the American cowboy. Much of the music was written for the films they starred in.
