| Lesson Two: Different Types of Country | |
Rockabilly Evolves
Elvis Presley absorbed the sounds of both Beale Street in Memphis and the Grand Ole Opry into his own unique style. Others followed suit and soon there was a generation of rockabillies heating up the radio airwaves, with their mixture of hillbilly music and rock & roll attitude.
Some of the more popular in the style of Rockabilly are Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash, although Johnny Cash was a chameleon in that he can be classified in many of the different sub-genres of country music. He could easily be placed in the Western category, as he'd recorded many Western albums. He also could be placed in the Outlaw category due to his participation with the Highwaymen. You can't really categorize Johnny Cash. He did it all, and he did it all so well.
