Guide Review
Elvis Presley - Aloha From Hawaii
Elvis live. There's not a lot more that needs to be said. While most people tend to think of all of Elvis' '70s shows as bloated mockeries of the svelte "King of Rock 'n' Roll," it's a gross exaggeration. On January 14, 1973, when Elvis was beamed via satellite into billions of living rooms worldwide, he was a thin, dynamite, entertainment machine. One week past his 38th birthday, Elvis was in top form. Despite his personal sorrows, health issues along with his recent separation and pending divorce from Priscilla, Elvis was pure dynamite when he hit the stage. Beamed live worldwide (the show was broadcast 12:40 a.m. Honolulu time to 38 countries, with only North America getting missed on the initial broadcast due to Colonel Parker's continual scheming), it was aired during prime time in the Far East, Australia, and New Zealand. It captured an estimated 91.8 % of the Philippine population and one quarter of the four million people in Hong Kong also tuned in. From Hong Kong to mainland China, plus the vast audiences in Australia and New Zealand, made for a record-breaking audience; the show was finally broadcast in North America on April 4. It would be the last Elvis TV special broadcast on network television during his lifetime.

What audiences around the world were treated to was one of Elvis' finest performances, a tight, solid hour and a half (more or less) of solid music. Elvis, quite aware of the size of his audience, kept his usual chatter to a bare minimum and focused all his attention on presenting the songs. To his own powerful "Burning Love," and standards like "Blue Suede Shoes," "Hound Dog," and "Suspicious Minds," Elvis added majestic covers of Marty Robbins' "You Gave Me A Mountain," Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and Jim Reeves' "Welcome To My World" (proving as always Elvis' abiding love for country music). Elvis' pure vocals burn through "My Way," "Love Me," "Johnny B. Goode," "I'll Remember You," and the majestic "An American Trilogy," to the beautiful closing number for all his concerts, "I Can't Help Falling In Love." (One trivia noteL whoever programed the disc entered the titles to the tracks wrong. What comes up in Windows Media doesn't match what's actually on the disc. Oddly, it appears to mirror what's on the "Madison Square Garden" disc.)

To this collection has been added five songs that Elvis recorded while in Hawaii which were added to the live broadcast of the show to pad it out to a full 90 minutes for television. "Blue Hawaii," "Ku-U-I-Po," "No More," "Hawaiian Wedding Song," and "Early Morning Rain." These songs have been released many times in many places over the years, but have finally been collected here where they belong, as part of the overall show from Hawaii, January 1973. This is one of Elvis' finest performances, when he was definitely at the top of his game. Listen and enjoy.
