Steve Earle - Guitar Town
Back in 1986, when this album was released, it barely made any waves in Nashville, until rock critics took notice. After favorable reviews of the album, Steve released the title cut and, as he says, "Suddenly I had a career."
He had that career because of Guitar Town, and the way the song almost immediately hit the top ten on the charts, and then the album itself hit number one. It was so quick that it all seemed to happen in the blink of an eye. Other songs like "Hillbilly Highway," "Fearless Heart," and "Good Ol' Boy (Gettin' Tough)" showcases Steve's songwriting abilities, while tunes like "Think It Over" pick up the pace a little bit and the live bonus track, "State Trooper" gives a Bruce Springsteen kick to the end of the album.
Guitar Town held its own back in 1986, as well it could do the very same today. What I like about albums that feature singer/songwriters singing their own material, is there is a higher probability of finding songs that are beyond the quality of the mainstream and that is found here.
