Various Artists - Stone Country: Country Artists Perform The Songs Of The Rolling Stones
What happens if you mix a country artist with a rock singer's songs? You may just get a collection like this one, where the country boys (and girls) interpret the Rolling Stones songs from their long career. There are eleven tracks on this CD sung by the likes of Collin Raye, Tracy Lawrence, Travis Tritt, Deana Carter, The Tractors, Sammy Kershaw, Rodney Crowell, Blackhawk, Little Texas, Nanci Griffith and the great George Jones.
This CD works well because the Rolling Stones have always loved country music enough to incorporate some country themes into their music. The best tracks on this include Blackhawk's stellar bluegrass style cover of the rocker "Wild Horses" and Collin Raye's note for note remake of the classic "Brown Sugar." George Jones' cover of "Time Is On My Side" turns it into a bluesy song as only George Jones could sing. Travis Tritt as usual also plays the role of outlaw well with "Honky Tonk Woman."
If you want an enjoyable CD that will surprise you, try Stone Country. Those of you who may be aging rockers who loved the stones will be delighted to hear how well their songs stand among contemporary Country Music's best vocalists.
