The motion picture, Urban Cowboy is based around a honky tonk called "Gilleys" where nightly dancing, punching bag games and bucking machines make up the atmosphere. After the popularity of the movie, numerous nightclubs popped up with the same type of atmosphere.
The songs on this album are a big part of the movie, and non-country artists such as Jimmy Buffet, Dan Fogelberg, Bob Seger, Bonnie Rait, and Boz Scaggs all had songs in the film along with country artists like Mickey Gilley, Kenny Rogers, Anne Murray, Johnny Lee and the Charlie Daniels Band.
