Sons of the Desert - Whatever Comes First
The first time that I heard "Whatever Comes First" I expected big things from the Sons of the Desert. After getting their debut record of the same name, I instantly was gratified by the fact that the band had recorded a great debut album. While "Whatever Comes First" and the second single "Hand Of Fate" were uptempo ode's to love, the third single, "Leaving October" is the centerpiece of the album.
Featuring some mournful lyrics about a widower and his child, the song was not a huge hit. Too bad because as the bands last big hit, "What I Did Right," proved, Drew Womack has a set of vocal chords that simply showcase some strong emotions. Add to the fact that Drew wrote the song with Tom Douglas, (Collin Raye's "Little Rock"), and one gets the sense of a true talent who was only waiting to emerge.
The greatness of this CD isn't just held in the singles. The other eight songs make this album complete as any can get without any "filler" tracks. Other than "Leaving October" my favorite track is Phil Vassar's "Drive Away." If you are looking for some fun and well written songs, go search out this fine debut by Sons of the Desert, you will be glad you did.
