In their eighth release since getting their start in 1991, Diamond Rio has put together a set of tunes that speak to us all. While many groups change members over time, in the ten years between their debut album and this latest release, Diamond Rio still consists of Marty Roe, Jimmy Olander, Dan Truman, Brian Prout, Dana Williams and Gene Johnson.
While their bandmembers remain the same, their music has evolved, and changed as the years go by. They still have those wonderful tight harmonies that are usually found only in families, but they're not afraid to experiment with their music... and it works.
One example of the way Diamond Rio has grown is found in the song "Here I Go Fallin,'" which has parts that are spoken. The guys have also found an excellent bluegrass song to record in "Hearts Against the Wind."
Then, they have added a duet with Chely Wright, in the haunting tale of alcoholism, "I'm Trying." The song wasn't originally planned as a duet, but after recording it, they felt that it would have more impact if it were a duet. So, they asked Chely to come and sing on it, and while I've never heard them sing it minus Chely, she really does add a lot to the song, and I couldn't imagine it without her. Another fun song is "Sweet Summer" which starts out with a child singing "Oh What a Beautiful Morning," and the sounds of children playing in the middle. The little girl that sings at the start of the song is none other than Marty Roe's daughter, and the children playing are the Diamond Rio kids, taped on the playground.
The first single released from the album, the fun-loving "Stuff" didn't do well on the charts, but the second release, the title cut, is racing up the charts with its poignant message of loss.
