Mark started out the show with the lead song from Permanently, called This Can't Be Love.. This song is really great, and I'm hoping he'll release it as a single. Being an uptempo song, it would be a refreshing change from the ballads that he's released lately (not that I mind the ballads; they're great.} Maybe it would also fend off the comments that Mark is strictly a balladeer. He can sing uptempo songs just as well, and this tune is the proof.
Here's the set list. Each song is also a link to a RealAudio clip, courtesy of Mark Wills Official Website.
Mark said that he was nervous as it's been a while since he was out on the road. He said that last month he was on a cruise where he also performed, and they were in the Caribbean. While there they ended up on a nude beach. They didn't know it was a nude beach until they got there and saw four 75-year-old naked men. Mark quipped that if there are girls there that are young and gorgeous, they'll have clothes on, but if they're old and saggy, they'll be nude.
In introducing "I Do, (Cherish You)" Mark said that they had been recording the album, and were three months into the project which would become Wish You Were Here and had several songs down, when they realized that they didn't like the direction the album was going. So, they started over again, and the very last song they cut was "I Do, (Cherish You)" which became his first No. 1 song, and first No. 1 video, and he thanked us for helping make it so.
Before Mark sang the song "In My Arms" which is off his latest album, Permenantly, he told the story of how it came to be. This was when Mark's daughter, Mally was eight months old. He was on a radio show, and was talking about her, and how she'd changed his life, and how he hoped he could be the father she deserved. The two other writers on the song, Monty Criswell and Michael White, after hearing Mark on the show talking about Mally had an idea for a song. So, Mark joined them, and "In My Arms" was the result.
Mark plays several different guitars during his show, and he has a Takamine that had an autograph on it. When I looked more closely, I could see it was Steve Wariner's autograph. You can see some of the autograph in the picture on the right.
Mark puts on a heck of a show. If he's coming your way, I'd definitely recommend seeing him.
