Terri Clark Concert Review Konocti Harbor Resort - Kelseyville, CA | |
|
This was my second time seeing Terri Clark in concert. The first time was in December 2000 in Las Vegas at the Fremont Street Experience. This time was at one of my favorite venues, Konocti Harbor Resort in Kelseyville, CA. Terri was playing the indoor showroom. Konocti also has an outdoor amphetheater that they open during the summer season.
The opening act was the California Cowboys, a local Bay Area band. They also opened for Sara Evans when I saw her at Konocti last year. They played a short set of about 6 or 7 songs, and their show ended around 8:45 pm.
Terri started her set with the title track of her new album, "Pain To Kill." She then sang shortened versions of "A Little Gasoline," "Every Time I Cry,""Emotional Girl," and "If I Were You."
The night was a special one for Terri who informed us that earlier that day she received a call from Mike at her label telling her that "I Just Wanna Be Mad" was going to be #1 this coming week. As she gave the news she jumped up and down, and some audience members started chanting "Number one.. number one!" Terri said it was extra special as it had been 3 years since she had last had a #1 song, and 46 weeks since a woman held the #1 spot on the charts.
Terri then sang another song from her new album, "Three Mississippi," which she said will be her next single. After finishing the song, Terri told the story of receiving a phone message from a young boy, maybe 12 or so, at the hotel that day. He said "Hi mom. I know you're getting ready to go to the concert and all, and we're going to go out and get some milk. Can you give us a call when you get back?" She said, "Obviously, it was for someone else. Who's kid was that?" She also said it was kind of neat to hear someone call her mom, and that was something she didn't expect to hear, unless her dog all of a sudden decides to start talking. She then talked some more about her album, saying the whole thing is about breaking up, and the next song is a nice song about breaking up. Then, she sang "I Just Called To Say Goodbye."
Next, Terri said that the next song was one she wrote with Mary Chapin Carpenter, and sang "No Fear."
Terri said that she was born in Canada and moved to Nashville in 1987, and got her first job at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge. She said that when you play places like that you need to know a lot of different songs and she has lots of different influences, and would like to sing some of them. I don't know all the songs she sang, but she sang "Mama, He's Crazy," "If You've Got Leaving On Your Mind," "Coal Miner's Daughter," and "Girl's Night Out."
There are two screens on either side of the rear stage, and Terri noticed herself on the screen, and said "Oh, lookit, I'm on TV." Then, she played this awesome bluesy tune with lots of guitar. I think it's called "Love Me Like A Man." After that, she introduced each band member, and each one had a solo.
Next was "When Boy Meets Girl," where the audience sings the title line each time. Then Terri turned around and started dancing to some Hawaiian music. She said now that she has a #1 song, she needs a vacation. Then, she explained that she was told that she should try to please as many people as she can at her shows, cuz not everyone loves country music. She then proceeded to sing the chorus of "When Boy Meets Girl" in different ways... one was a rock version, one a bluegrass version, and one a gospel version.
Next up was "Better Things To Do," and "Easy on the Eyes," and then out came the cowbell for "Poor Poor Pitiful Me." By this time it was 10:55, and Terri waved goodbye, and shook people's hands in the front row, me included.
She came back for an encore and sang some covers of "Stay With Me," "My Love Is Alife," and "Tell Me Something Good."
What a great show this was. Terri has a blast on stage. If you get the chance to see her, I hope you will go. You won't be disappointed.

Terri's latest number one, "I Just Wanna Be Mad"was next, and the audience was so into it, singing along. After that, she got a stool out and sat down and removed her hat and quipped "It's not over til the hat lady sings." Then, she apologized for the bad joke. She asked if there were people in love in the audience. Some applause. She asked if there were people looking for love in the audience. More applause. She said that a bar is a good place to find love, and we should try it. Then she sang "Now That I've Found You."
