The 41st Annual Grammy Awards

Dateline: 03/01/99

The Grammy Awards

The 41st Annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles on February 24th. The show was broadcast on CBS and lasted for 3 hours. Of that three hours, very little was country music related. However, I'd like to recap the country parts for you here in case you missed the show. At the end of the article you can find a list of Grammy links to check out when you're done.

There were eight categories that pertained to country music. Here is a list of all the Country Grammy Winners.

Early in January I held a contest where you, the readers submitted your Grammy Predictions. From these predictions, I drew from a list of several readers that predicted the most correct categories, and the winning reader will receive a copy of one of four CD's. If you'd like to see who won, you can do so by checking the Original Contest page.

I also took all the predictions and created a list of *your* Grammy favorites, and you can find who they are on the The Fan's Grammy Winners page. You'd be surprised at how different the *fans* vote, compared to the Grammy voters.

Quite a few country artists were in attendance mainly presenting but there were also two country performances.

Here are the Country stars that presented an award:

Faith Hill and Clint Black presented the award for Best Rock Album.

The award was won by Sheryl Crow.

Martina McBride and the Backstreet Boys presented the award for Best Country Album.

The award was won by The Dixie Chicks.

The Dixie Chicks and Brian Setzer presented the award for Best Male Country Vocalist.

The award was won by Vince Gill.

*NOTE* Vince, upon winning the award held it up to his ear and quipped, "I'm not really sure, but I was told that if you listen real close to one of these, you can hear Garth Brooks play baseball."

Later, the Legend Award was given out to: Johnny Cash, Mel Torme, Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe, Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cook, and Otis Redding.

The following country artists performed on the show:

Shania Twain sang "Man, I Feel Like a Woman," and Vince Gill sang "If You Ever Have Forever in Mind."

I noticed an error near the end of the show, when they were announcing Record of the Year. Shania Twain was nominated for her album, Come On Over, and when they showed her, "Where Your Road Leads" was playing. It would be interesting to find out what both she and Trisha thought about that.

What did YOU think about the Grammys? Did you like the show? Hate it? Think the wrong people won? Think all the right people won? Speak your mind (gently, please) on the Country Music Bulletin Boards page.
