CD Review: Trisha Yearwood Real Live Woman

Dateline: 04/10/00

Trisha Yearwood - Real Live Woman

Real Live Woman Cover

Exciting... fresh... emotional... These are just a few words that I could use to describe Trisha's latest release, Real Live Woman. It's quite different from her last cd, Where Your Road Leads, which had a more "pop" feel to it.

Gone are the duets of the past, and instead Trisha has called upon the talents of Jackson Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris and Kim Richey to back up her lovely vocals.

Below you can see my feelings on each of the cuts on this cd.

Where Are You Now - This song just jumps out of the chute. Co-written by Mary Chapin Carpenter and Kim Richey, who also provide backing vocals here. The harmony is excellent, and it has a bluegrass feel to it that might remind you of something Patty Loveless might record. Great song, and this will be the 2nd single off the album.

One Love - This one slows things down. Very sexy and sensual feel here.

Sad Eyes - Before hearing Bruce Springsteen's original, I didn't think it sounded like a Springsteen-type song. But after listening to a soundclip of his version, I have to take that comment back. However, when Trisha sings it, she does it "her" way. Love the falsetto in her voice. Jackson Browne does backup here.

Some Days - Love this bluesy number. We hear about some days being better than others. Ain't that the truth?

I Did - I think everyone can releate to this song about taking chances and giving in to what you want most. Hope she'll release this as a single.

Try Me Again - Another song that many people can relate to. This one is about wanting to get back together with someone. You can hear the ache in her voice as she sings it. This is an old Linda Ronstadt song, and if you listen to the original, you'll see Trisha nailed it.

Too Bad You're No Good - This one is great fun. Upbeat number with Miss Emmylou Harris singing harmony with Trisha. If this doesn't make you wanna get up in dance, nothing will.

Real Live Woman - This Bobbie Cryner-penned song has such a great message about liking who you are, and not trying to be someone different. Love it.

I'm Still Alive - This song reminds me of Trisha of old. Great tune penned by Matraca Berg; one of three songs Matraca wrote on this album.

Wild For You Baby - Another bluesy ballad. Probably my least favorite off the disk, not that it's bad, but that it doesn't move me as much as the others.

Come Back When It Ain't Raining - This is the second Matraca Berg song, and it's another winner. She co-wrote it with the great Harlan Howard. The song is a mid-tempo with a neat key change on the chorus.

When A Love Song Sings The Blues - This final tune is the third Matraca Berg song. Real sad ballad to end the album.

Real Live Woman Audio Clips

I'd rate this CD 4 7/8 out of 5. I loved just about every song on the CD, and would highly recommend anyone pick this one up.
