To listen to Clay Davidson's first single, the title cut from Unconditional, you might think you're in for an album full of ballads. You'd be sorely wrong. In fact, there are many more upbeat songs on this album, then ballads, although Clay does both styles justice.
Not only is Clay a singer with a voice that can be edgy and rough, but he can also sing 'em smooth as silk. Add to this, the fact that he also wrote or co-wrote 7 of the 11 songs on this album. And, there's not a bad song in the bunch.
Below you can see my feelings on each of the cuts on this cd.
Makin' Hay - Clay starts out with a great guitar lick on this song, and before you know it, you're on your feet dancing along. The song was co-written by Marcus Hummon and Jason Sellers, and is a sure fire bet to be released as a single.
I Can't Lie To Me - Slowing down the beat a bit with this song that will remind you of Hank Jr. Clay puts his baritone to good use with this tune.
Unconditional - What can I say about this wonderful song? Love it. Great story.
Plain Ol' Pain - A great country-rock sound with this one. No mistaking this for a pop or rock album. It's country to the core, and this song is a perfect example of that.
Sometimes - This ballad is as sweet as Unconditional. With lyrics like, "Yes you're all I want and all I'll ever need. I'm still hopelessly in love as I can be," how can you go wrong?
My Best Friend And Me - Another country rocker here, talking about best friends growing up.
Doghouse Rights - Clay gets bluesy here and it's great!
Come Rain or Shine - Love this one too. More of a bluesy feel again, about a love that can weather any storm. Definite single material.
One More Day - This one picks up the beat, and talks about not giving up.
What Was I Thinking Of - Here's another killer ballad about letting love slip away. "I thought we might always be in love, just a fool with a dream, what was I thinking of."
We're All Here - This is a rockin' party song to end the album. These guys are drowning their sorrows together. "We're all here 'cause we ain't all there."

I'd rate this CD 4 3/4 out of 5. A great debut album. I see a great future for Clay in country music. He's got a nice blend of traditional and contemporary music here.
