The Sophomore Jinx is something that all new artists fear when they've had success with their debut disc. Such is not the case here with the Wilkinsons. Their second release, Here and Now, is as good, if not better than Nothing But Love.
The trio also breaks formation, alternating leads on this album. While Tyler did sing lead on one song on their previous release, he now takes lead on four songs, and shares lead with Amanda on one. Even dad Steve gets a turn up front with the beautiful ballad, "The Only Rose," which he co-wrote with another Steve... Steve Wariner, who also sings harmony on the track.
All in all, the whole package is very eclectic, and both Tyler and Amanda's vocals have grown fuller and richer. And I for one was glad to hear Steve get a shot at lead too.
The following are my feelings on each of the eleven tracks.
Jimmy's Got A Girlfriend - This is the first single from the album, and I loved it when I first heard it. It's so upbeat and fun, you just gotta sing along.
It Was Only a Kiss - Love, love, love this! Amanda really sings the heck out of this one. It talks about a girl that got a kiss from a guy that she just can't seem to forget.
One Of Us Is In Love - Tyler takes the leads here on this mellow mid-tempo tune. Another excellent song.
Till You Let Go - Amanda back at lead on this one. This one is about telling the one you love that even though people may say I'll break your heart, I'm not going anywhere till you let go.
Shame On Me - The harmonies here are killer. The song has a great message about telling those close to you how much you care. This talks about someone that lost their relationship due to neglect. They thought it would always be there, so they didn't try to keep it going.
Hypothetically - Total Beatles feel to this song. If you read the Wilkinsons' comments on this, you'll see that was intended. Again, the harmonies are excellent. Tyler's on lead here again.
1999 - Another great one. Mid-tempo. Talks about the guy keeps calling the girl by his old girlfriend's name. She sings, "You're cheating on me, cheating on us, cheating yourself right out of love. You're slipping away from me unconciously. And I'm losing you to some old memory."
Don't Look At Me Like That - Tyler takes the lead here in this mid-tempo song about breaking up when you don't really want to.
I'll Know Love - Amanda has the lead here on this song about discovering love for the first time.
Me, Myself And I - Tyler has the lead on this pretty ballad that says, "Me, myself and I, there's three good reasons why, you should turn around and come back home tonight."
The Only Rose - Dad, Steve gets a turn at lead vocals on this great ballad. Steve Wariner helped co-write it and lends harmony vocals on this song about it being ok to be different.
