Phil Vassar

The No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems Tour rolled into Marysville, CA on May 31, 2002. This was the first time I had been to the Autowest Amphitheater and I must say I was really pleased with the venue. The seats were comfortable, and I'd have to say that pretty much anywhere you sat, you'd have a good view of the stage which was really large.

The venue does not allow cameras in the show, so I contacted the labels to get a photo pass, and I was told it would be waiting at Will Call.

The show was to start at 7:00 pm, and I arrived around 5:45 and contacted the person at Will Call and found out how it was going to work for the photo pass. I had to give up my camera and meet her at the left side of the stage five minutes before each act, and then I would be able to shoot all I wanted of the first two songs by that artist. Then I would go back to my seat and meet her again five minutes before the next artist. Seemed odd, and people did have cameras, but none of them had professional cameras, only the throw away kind, and people weren't allowed to take pictures from their seats. It's a shame, cuz I could have gotten some excellent pictures, and probably would have come back with about 100 pics of each artist. As it was, I was able to get from 15-30 pics per artist, depending on how fast I shot the pictures.

Phil started promptly at 7:00 pm with "That's Why I Love You." He is really active during his show, crossing the stage and waving at people.

One of the basketball playoffs was going on during the show and Phil gave us an update on the score since the Sacramento Kings were in the playoffs, and that was the home team. He said "L.A. 14 - Kings 10." There was much booing at that announcement.

During "Six Pack Summer" Phil jumped on top of his piano, and segued into "Stay a Little Bit Longer," with his guitar player singing that part with falsetto. Boy, he sure can hit those high notes. Then, he went back to his song. Towards the end, when I didn't have my camera to take a picture, he even got on top of his piano on his stomach and spun around and around. I really enjoyed Phil, and would tell anyone that liked any of his songs to go see him when he comes your way. He's an excellent performer. Lots of energy and charisma.
