Concert Review: Collin Raye

Dateline: 09/06/99

Collin Raye Concert Review

I saw Collin Raye at the California State Fair on August 29, 1999. The show was at the amphitheater, which had about 25 rows of seats 4 sections across on the grass up front, and a large permanent grandstand behind.

I've you've read any of my concert reviews from earlier this summer, you'll see I've been having an awful time with pictures. This was no exception. While I remembered my camera, my notepad, and my pen, I didn't realize you weren't allowed to take pictures until I got to the amphitheater itself, which was way too late for me not to have a camera with me. There was no information on the tickets, or on the fair's website stating not to bring cameras. Luckily, they didn't search people, so I was ok for getting in. I didn't take any pictures though, because with the luck I have, they'd use me as an example, and take my camera away or something.

I arrived at the Fair around 6:15 pm. I had never been to the State Fair before, so I took in some of the sites, then made my way over to the amphitheater.

There were already people in line, and I read the sign about no cameras, and that the gates would open at 7:00 pm. I grabbed something to eat, then got in line.

The seating was general admission, so I looked for a seat as close to the stage as I could find. Even if I wasn't going to be able to take pictures, I wanted to be able to see Collin. I ended up in the 21st row, on the aisle.

The night was perfect for a concert. It wasn't overly hot or cold. From time to time, the monorail would pass by the area, and people were making their way back and forth between their seats and the different places inside the concert gates where you could buy food.

The concert started differently than any I had ever seen before. The American flag was brought out and placed in a stand on the stage, and a girl that had won the chance to sing the "National Anthem" came out on stage, introduced by the DJs from KNCI. Everyone rose, and the girl performed the "National Anthem." Great pipes on her. She gets a thumbs up from me too. :)

Another thing that was different at this concert, was that they had a sign-language interpreter signing everything that was said and sung. Pretty neat.
