CD Review: Where Your Road Leads - Trisha Yearwood

Dateline: 09/07/98

Where Your Road Leads - Trisha Yearwood

Where Your Road Leads is Trisha's seventh release on MCA-Nashville, and in my opinion one of her best. The album contains a majority of ballads, however there are some up-tempo songs as well, all easy on the ears. It's easy to see how she received the distinction of being the current Queen of Country Music.

The title isn't one that Yearwood is comfortable with. However it is well earned as she's won the Triple Crown, receiving the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, the ACM Top Female Vocalist, and the Grammy for Best Female Vocalist.

This marks her first time co-producing her own work, and she's done an excellent job along with MCA President, Tony Brown.

Of all the songs on the album, my favorite would have to be "Heart Like A Sad Song." Before buying the CD myself, I heard Trisha sing this on Prime Time Country, backed up by Garth Brooks on guitar. The song was one of the main reasons I decided to purchase the CD.

My feelings on each track are as follows:

  • There Goes My Baby - This upbeat song has me tapping my toes and singing along every time.
  • Never Let You Go Again - This slow ballad has a beat to remind me of Gloria Estefan's "Words Get In The Way." Love it!
  • That Ain't The Way I Heard It - Sassy and bold. She shows she won't just take her man cheating on her.
  • Powerful Thing - While there are a lot of ballads, and many with a pop feel, this one exudes a country style. Infectious sing-along song here that Trisha has added to her live shows.
  • Love Wouldn't Lie To Me - You can feel the ache in her voice in this love-done-me-wrong song.
  • Wouldn't Any Woman - Another upbeat song about moving on from a failed relationship.
  • I'd Still Love You More - Another Diane Warren penned song, like "How Do I Live," and another winner!
  • Heart Like A Sad Song - Tear-jerker. Beautiful ballad.
  • I Don't Want To Be The One - Still another ballad. Haunting... Carole King was a co-writer on this song.
  • Bring Me All Your Lovin' - Soulful ballad.
  • Where Your Road Leads - Beautiful song written by Victoria Shaw, which she sings with Garth Brooks but to me, there isn't enough of Garth's singing to make this a true duet.

It's hard to find a bad track, actually. I give this album 5 stars out of 5. It's a winner!

Purchase this, or other Trisha Yearwood albums from my Country Music Bookstore.
