CD Review: Terri Clark - Fearless
|
|
This is my second Terri Clark CD. The first one I purchased was
How I Feel, which I also reviewed here on the site.
Terri has mentioned several times that this is her most "personal" album yet. She co-wrote 8 of the 12 songs here. While there are no tracks that I dislike, I will say that the album is rather ballad-heavy. Most of the songs are either ballads or mid-tempo tunes, with only one upbeat song, "To Tell You Everything." Again, I'm not saying this is a bad thing. If you're in the mood to relax, this is a perfect album to fire up on the CD player.
Lastly, do not forget to load this up on your CD Rom. There are some neat interactive features such as an acoustic performance by Terri of "No Fear," and interviews, as well as a cool screensaver, and links to her website where you can download wallpaper.
No Fear - If I had to pick one song on this CD as my favorite, this would have to be it. Terri wrote this one with Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Sometimes Goodbye - This is another great mid-tempo tune that says "country" all the way. Not too many songs nowadays that you can hear the banjo, but this is one of them. This one speaks about how it's hard to end a relationship, but sometimes saying goodbye is one thing you can do, when you realize it's just not working.
Take My Time - This song is very folksy and bluesy with the harmonica parts. This talks about how you don't have to be in a rush in a relationship. Sometimes moving slowly is the thing to do.
Empty - Another ballad that's killer. "I want to pour out my soul 'til I'm empty... empty." This song gives me goosebumps when I hear it. Terri has so much emotion in her voice as she sings it.
Getting There - This song is another mid-tempo tune. It talks about "the living is all in the getting there..." Take your time and enjoy life. You don't have to always be first in line.
Easy From Now On - This pretty ballad was written by Carlene Carter and recorded by Emmylou Harris, who provides background vocals. Very bluegrass sounding with the fiddle and banjo very prominent. Carlene also recorded it, and Terri's version is more like hers than Emmylou's. Perhaps mainly because Terri's vocal stylings are more like Carlene's.
A Little Gasoline - The first single from the album talks about being at the end of a relationship and knowing you'll be just fine if you just have a little gasoline and a road to drive on.
Last Thing I Wanted - Even though it's the last thing she wanted, she's fallen for him. That harmonica is back in this song too. This one is written by Mary Chapin Carpenter and Kim Richey.
To Tell You Everything - From the guitar intro, this song screams Mary Chapin Carpenter, and it's not strange that she co-wrote this with Terri. It's the most upbeat song on the album. I really like it!
The Real Thing - This song has the feel of a Lee Roy Parnell song. Fun lyrics and great groove.
Midnight's Gone - This mid-tempo song talks about living in a really small town, and always thinking that you'd get away when you got older. But, "midnight's gone and I'm not..."
Good Mother - This beautiful ballad talks about how she has a good family... good mother... good father... to keep her feet on the ground, and know that it's alright to just be herself.

I gotta give this album 4 7/8 out of 5. I love the sound of this album. The guitars are very prominent, and it sometimes seems that Terri is right there in the room singing the song. Great album to relax with. Definitely one to add to your country music collection.
