CD Review: High Mileage by Alan Jackson

Dateline: 11/02/98
Alan Jackson - High Mileage
High Mileage Cover

I want to clarify first, that while I do enjoy Alan Jackson's music, I wouldn't call myself a die-hard fan. This is the second CD I have purchased of his. The first one I bought was A Little About Living.

The first thing I wanted to see when I opened the CD was the Enhanced features. I play a lot of my CD's on my CD Rom on my computer, so I was curious what would be available. The only other CD's I have that were Enhanced were Where Your Road Leads, by Trisha Yearwood, and The Key, by Vince Gill. Both of these only loaded a small album cover and you could go to the artist's website, or view video clips (if available), or pictures, (if available).

What I experienced with Alan Jackson's CD was totally different. When I inserted the CD into my CD Rom, the disk started loading and I got a menu where I could choose Alan Jackson's ECD, Link to Alan Jackson Websites, Read-Me file, Install Quicktime 2.1.2, or Quit.

If you choose the ECD option you get a menu with personal facts, discography, photos, video clips and web links. I really enjoyed the video clips from several different videos, as well as a clip from Alan's the 1996 Lake Show.

The Discography has all of Alan's album covers, and you can click on each one for an audio clip. The web links you can only view if you have AOL, or it gives you the URL and you can visit it with your own software.

Now on to my feelings on each cut:

  • Right on the Money - At the time of reviewing this album, this is Alan's current single. It's got a great sound, and it's very upbeat. I'm sure it will make it to the top of the charts.
  • Gone Crazy - A nice ballad. You can tell he wrote this while he and Denise were still separated.
  • Little Man - This is the story of those one-horse towns that end up getting bought out by big corporations.
  • What a Day Yesterday Was - Another really sad ballad. Very pretty. Looking back on yesterdays.
  • Hurtin' Comes Easy - Another upbeat song that I think will make for a great single.
  • I'll Go On Loving You - Love this song! Love the video! Very different style for Alan, but it works.
  • Another Good Reason - This song reminds me of another Alan Jackson song, "I Don't Even Know Your Name." Great honky-tonk tune.
  • A Woman's Love - A great song about a woman's love, and not taking it for granted.
  • Dancin' All Around It - Another slow ballad.
  • Amarillo - This song really reminds me of something George Strait would sing. Love it.
