Guide Picks - CMA Album of the Year Winners
This award is for an album as a whole unit. The album should be judged on all aspects including, but not limited to, artist's performance, musical background, engineering, packaging, design, art, layout, and liner notes. At least 60% of the product in the album must have been first mastered or released domestically during the eligibility period. The list below shows the last ten winners from 1992 - 2001.
1) Ropin' The Wind - Garth Brooks (1992)
With the release of Ropin' The Wind Garth did something that no other country artist had done. This being debut at No. 1 on both the Country Albums chart and the Top 200 Albums chart. The album went on to sell over 14 million copies, which is Garth's second biggest selling album after No Fences the previous year.

2) I Still Believe In You - Vince Gill (1993)
This album was one of Vince's early successes. With the monster title track winning ACM and CMA Song of the Year awards, plus guest appearances by Delbert McClinton and Alison Krauss, make this an album for every country music fan's collection.

3) Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles - Various Artists (1994)
Some of the highlights are Travis Tritt's excellent rendition of "Take It Easy," Vince Gill's "I Can't Tell You Why," and Clint Black's "Desperado." Other artists included on the tribute are Little Texas, John Anderson, Alan Jackson, Suzy Bogguss, Diamond Rio, Trisha Yearwood, Billy Dean, Tanya Tucker, Brooks & Dunn and Lorrie Morgan. If you've grown up with the Eagles music, and you enjoy country, you will most definitely enjoy these performances.

4) When Fallen Angels Fly - Patty Loveless (1995)
While Patty Loveless had many big hits prior to the release of When Fallen Angels Fly, she had an incredibly successful string of hit singles off of this album. Spawning no less than four Billboard Top 10 hits, the CD was also named CMA Album of the Year.

5) Blue Clear Sky - George Strait (1996)
George Strait consistently modernizes country music while keeping it rooted in tradition. The title track sports a contemporary pop-influenced melody, but surrounded by pedal steel, it remains a country song, and a good one. The album's full of good country songs, especially the old-school honky-tonk of "King of the Hill," and the power ballad "Carried Away."

6) Carrying Your Love With Me - George Strait (1997)
The fifth time was the charm for Lonestar. After being nominated for four previous years, they finally took the 2001 CMA Vocal Group award with this album, I'm Already There. The title track was a multi-week No. 1 hit, and was nominated for Song and Single of the year for 2001 as well.

7) Everywhere - Tim McGraw
While it wasn't the album that contained his first #1 song, it was the one that skyrocketed Tim McGraw into the country music stratosphere. With six #1 songs, including "It's Your Love," which spent six weeks at the top of the charts, this was the album that really made Tim McGraw a household name.

8) A Place In The Sun - Tim McGraw (1999)
Continuing in the tradition of his last album, Everywhere, McGraw comes up with another winner, spawning four No. 1 singles with "My Best Friend," "Please Remember Me," "Something Like That", and "My Next Thirty Years."

9) Fly - Dixie Chicks
Despite the daunting task of recording their sophomore album and hoping they would at least match the success of Wide Open Spaces, the gals really knocked one out of the ballpark with "Fly."

10) O Brother, Where Art Thou - Various - 2001
The soundtrack from the movie of the same name won the 2001 CMA Album of the Year award, and "I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow" received the 2001 CMA Single of the Year award. Plus two other songs were also nominated in the Vocal Event category. A wonderful introduction to traditional and bluegrass music.
