Born:

October 9, 1993, in Garner, North Carolina

Early Years:

Scotty McCreery grew up in North Carolina, where his mother worked as a real estate agent and his father was in manufacturing. Scotty began singing from an early age, and was a member of his high school and church chorus. When not singing, he worked as a supermarket cashier at Lowes Foods and pitched for Garner High School's baseball team.

Auditioning for American Idol:

McCreery auditioned for American Idol when he was only 16 years old. His deep-voiced rendition of Josh Turner's "Your Man" impressed judges and earned him his ticket to Hollywood. McCreery was one of the stronger contenders on season 10 of Idol, and he took home the big prize at the season finale in May 2011.

Scott McCreery on Winning American Idol:

"This is pretty wild, I gotta say. It's a whole lot more than I bargained for getting into it, but I'm handling it well. This is what I asked for and this is my new life! It's a really wild ride so far," the newly christened star told to USA Today.

Going to No. 1 with Clear as Day:

Winning American Idol was no guarantee of chart success for McCreery. But it was just that. In October 2011, he released his debut album Clear as Day. Featuring the singles "I Love You Big," "The Trouble With Girl," and "Water Tower Town," the album was a strong performer and eventually went platinum. In its first week of release, Clear as Day clocked in at #1 on the Billboard 200; it was the first debut album by a country artists to do so.

Relationship with Lauren Alaina:

"Lauren Alaina, she is something else," McCreery gushed of his American Idol competitor to USA Today in May 2011. "She sings like a bird, and she's such an amazing young lady."

But he denied there was any romance between them. "Me and her are more like a brother-sister thing." But what about the kiss she gave him after he won? "She told me before the show she was going to do that," he said, "kind of a joke thing. She's a character. She's lovely, we're really close friends. I met her day one of Hollywood Week and we were schoolmates through the whole experience."

However, when Alaina was asked about whether they were dating, she gave a more mixed answer. "We watch some movies together," she said. "We watched The Crazies, and it was very romantic."
