Formed:

1977, in Fort Payne, Alabama

Early Years:

Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry were cousins before they became bandmates. Both grew up on the outskirts of Fort Payne, Alabama, but made the trip into town to form the band Wildcountry with their relative Jeff Cook. In 1973, the threesome took their act on the road and officially changed the group's name to Alabama four years later. After adding drummer Mark Herndon to the lineup in 1979, the main components of the band were in place.

Hitting It Big:

Alabama signed with RCA Records after being discovered at a Nashville showcase. Their first single, "Tennessee River," also became their first #1 country single. It set the pattern for the group's dominance throughout the 1980s. Indeed, the Academy of Country Music named the Alabama Artist of the Decade in 1989.

Trivia Fact:

Alabama have sold over 57 million albums around the world.
