BILLY CURRINGTON (Nominated for Musical Event of the Year.)
Billy Currington grew up in Rincon, Ga., a town he remembers mostly for its dirt roads and simple lifestyle, which inspires his music to this day. Raised by his mother and alcoholic stepfather, Currington wrote the chorus to his heartbreaking debut hit single, "Walk A Little Straighter," at age 12. His stepfather did have at least one positive influence on him - he introduced him to the music of Alabama, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers and The Statler Brothers. To show his appreciation of Rogers' music, Currington included a cover of "Lucille" on his sophomore Mercury Nashville album, Doin' Somethin' Right, released in October. On the album, Currington, who was featured clothed on the March cover of Playgirl magazine, unveils a Southern sound of blues-tinged Country in several songs, including debut single "Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right," "Whole Lot More," "Here I Am" and "She's Got A Way With Me," a duet co-written with Michael McDonald.
