Bottom Line:

A Place To Land is a twelve song collection produced by Little Big Town and Wayne Kirkpatrick. All but two of the songs on the album were written by members of Little Big Town and Wayne Kirkpatrick ("Firebird Fly" was written by Jessi Alexander, Jon Randall, and Jon Mabe. "Lonely Enough" was written by Jessi Alexander, Jon Randall, and Darrell Brown).

There was a bit of apprehension on my part when I knew I would be reviewing A Place To Land, only because I really enjoyed Little Big Town's last album. After listening to it several times I can safely say that I was worried for absolutely nothing. This is a fine album and I might even dare to say it's better than The Road To Here. Not only are the group's harmonies tight, but the songs are perfect and the various instruments really make for a well-rounded release.

"I'm With The Band" is the first single off A Place To Land and tells a little bit about living life on the road. You might be in a different town every night, but you always know you'll be with your friends and fellow bandmates. The video for this song is almost like a four minute documentary following the group around as they travel.

There's a very western sound to "That's Where I'll Be" and I think the lyrics are outstanding. I must also mention the wonderful pedal and lap steel playing by Dan Dugmore on this song. The whole arrangement and production is superb and makes for one of my favorites on the album.

"Evangeline" may think she's hiding the secrets "that are too dark to tell", but she's not fooling anyone. Just because you aren't physically abused it doesn't mean you can't be emotionally battered and bruised. It can show in more ways than one and people can see through your denials.

I just can't get enough of the upbeat "Novocaine" and think it would be so fun to hear it released as a radio single. It's one of those songs you can't help but like even from the first time you listen. It's upbeat and a shoe-in to be a crowd favorite when played live. Wayne Kirkpatrick and the National guitar doesn't hurt anything either, nor does the dobro playing of Randy Kohrs.

The song, "Only What You Make Of It" was written in such a beautiful way. It's so easy to let bad situations drag you down but I really like the following lines: "It's a struggle it's a test / But can you find a place to rest? / In a house of bitterness / Just cause it ain't what you planned don't mean it ain't what it ought to be." You shouldn't make life so hard on yourself. Instead of walking around looking for the darkness, try finding some light.

There are many impressive songs on this album, and "To Know Love" is another one of them. It's very simple production-wise (which I love) and it's just so pleasant sounding. "'Cause to know you is to know love / And to know love is to know enough / To walk with you through this life / From now until the day I die / 'Cause what better way is there to live than to with you" is a feeling many people can relate to. The harmonies are also top-notch on this song.

The album's perfect closing song is "Fury," which tells the story of a woman who caught her man sleeping "in a liar's bed." She's not interested in hearing all sides of the story, her main concern is a little thing called revenge. Sorry won't be enough anymore. I like it when an album ends with a song that can leave an impression with you, and this one certainly fills the bill and caps off this collection of Little Big Town songs.
