Bottom Line:

If you are a fan of Texas / Red Dirt Country, it's almost a given that you'll like Bart Crow Band's Desperate Hearts, which was produced by Mack Damon. It's a little bit country and a little big rock and roll, which means it's not even close to being boring.

The Bart Crow Band's Desperate Hearts is an album with a little bit of something for everyone contained in the thirteen tracks. You can pop it into the CD player and not have to worry about skipping or fast-forwarding through a bad song, because you'd be hard pressed to find one.

You can be surrounded by friends yet still be all alone as proven on "Driftin' In The Wind." The man feels like a fool to have believed her profession of love, because now all he's been left with is a broken heart. They started out as friends and no there's nothing between them. "Like a lonely gypsy soul I'm just out here in the wind" is one way he describes his feelings.

The man in "Back Down" promises that he isn't down for the count when it comes to how much a woman thinks she knows about him. The jealous woman will pay for the way she's treated him and he can't wait to be there when it's time for her judgment day. He even says that he'll be there while she's looking up and he won't even look down at her.

I like the way "Saint Valentine" is put together lyrically. Most of us only want somebody to love, so we try whatever we can to find that special person and maybe that includes a little message sent up to the Saint. All in hopes that he'll send down a blessing of his very own. The man says: "I just want somebody to love, if you could find the time."

"Sweet Imitations" is interesting not only for the storyline but for the fact different parts of the songs have a faster or slower tempo. It's done in a neat way, and I like how the lyrics come around full circle. It starts with a man telling the story about his infidelity and how it began with a quick glance shot over to a woman in the bar and they ended up in a cheap motel room. He promised his wife he was a changed man but it would kill her to know that was a lie. If she left him, he'd be back at the bar feeling like he was in a prison cell.

Perfect order of songs as the next one, "Roses," is about a woman who said she'd never go away just up and left the man one morning. Guess with both of these songs we all learn that people don't always keep their promises because things can change in an instant. The man says to her she shouldn't be mad if and when he tries to win her back because from the start he thought they were meant to be together. "Don't be mad at me if I ask your friends if you're alright. Don't be mad at me if I cried all night 'til four. Don't be mad if I leave roses on your door" he says in his hurtful state of mind.

"Once A Day" might have a front porch sound to it with lyrics about being heartbroken, but if you want something heavier then it might be time for a "Change" only a few songs away. The guitar riffs are louder and the lyrics are more straight-forward and offer up no apologies for what they say. It's that kind of no apologies attitude that I like about this album. The Bart Crow Band did their music the way they wanted to and it comes across wonderfully on Desperate Hearts.
