The Charlie Daniels Band - Deuces

Blue Hat Records
Bottom Line:

This is a duets album that will knock your socks off. It has a sound and guest list that only Charlie Daniels could achieve. If you like a high energy sound loaded with talent, do yourself a favor and pick it up.

This is another terrific album from The Charlie Daniels Band. With a sound that is uniquely his, Daniels continues to record the music that feels right without tying it to any specific genre. His guests for this special album range from Blue Grass Legend Earl Scruggs to one of the renegades of the Muzik Mafia, Gretchen Wilson. You will find Jazz & Blues icon Bonnie Bramlett along with the high lonesome sound of Vince Gill. These are just a few of the thirteen different artists who jumped at the chance to record with Daniels. Some of the songs they chose to record were Daniels' originals. Others are favorites that were pulled from a cross section of musical genres.

From the time Daniels started performing, he refused to allow his music to be labeled as anything other than CDB music. It has been a mishmash of styles and music that he liked and wanted to do. He's a Southern boy with a Western flair. He is patriotic and isn't afraid to share his views with the world. He is sometimes called an outlaw, but he says that he isn't an outlaw but more of an outcast because he is just himself. He doesn't follow trends or fads. He says, "I can't be anybody but me." And there is no denying the impact he has had on the industry.

I was excited to get this CD because I know that the CDB always has a surprise or two up their sleeve. This album was no exception just for the musical smorgasbord of artists and song choices. It introduces new country artist (former Hootie & the Blowfish lead singer) Darius Rucker singing along on the Bob Dylan tune, "How Does It Feel." I'll be interested to see what Rucker does, he has a very gravely and distinct voice.

Travis Tritt toured with the CDB when he was first starting out and was a must have to be a part of this project. They joined forces for the Ray Charles tune, "What'd I Say." Gretchen Wilson lent her mix of smoke and sultry for a revamped version of the Johnny & June Carter Cash song, "Jackson." It was a bit different than the original but still fun to listen to.

The Scruggs family had taken Daniels under their wing when he first came to Nashville so "Maggie's Farm" was a song done in tribute to Louise Scruggs with Earl, Gary & Randy.

I love good bluegrass so I'll admit that two of my absolute favorite songs on here were "Evangeline" with the Del McCoury Band and "Daddy's Old Fiddle" with Dolly Parton. Both are great showcases of the top notch instrumental work that is a fundamental part of the genre, and very few people can match Daniels on a fiddle.

Other artists stopping by were Brenda Lee, Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry and Marty Stuart. Brad Paisley also stopped by the studio and the album finished with something fairly unique in the world of today's music. Some members of Stevie Ray Vaughn's band were in the studio when he came over and they just started jamming, doing a lot of the blues type of music. It was decided they needed something a little more unique to put on the album, and "Jammin' for Stevie" was done freeform with everyone doing solos and stretching their talents on it. The song was literally written in the studio for the album. It was a fun close to a very entertaining album.
