Heartland - I Loved Her First

About.com Rating five out of Five

Bottom Line:

After 12 long years, this six piece band of Alabama boys have finally made it into the spotlight. This CD gives us 11 songs of pure country. From a hard country rockin' sounds to gentle flowing melodies that'll pull at your heartstrings and everything in between. Produced by Walt Aldredge, who also wrote or co-wrote 5 of the songs, your gonna like listening to every song.

Having such a monster of a hit for your fist single must be an incredible relief for a new artist, but it must also put a little worry on you especially when the CD it's on hasn't been released yet. These guys have no worries. "I Loved Her First" has raced up the country charts and is currently #2. But, I expect it to be the first of a at least a few from this CD that will do very well on the charts. The song has a father seeing his little girl all grown up and gazing into the eyes of her new husband. What bride wouldn't want these lyrics to be included on her special day? Laced with a sweet fiddle, the melody even tugs at your heartstrings. Some of the other songs with slower melodies and sweet messages are, "You," "Judge A Man By The Woman," and one of my favorites, "Built To Last."

The guys have also included a remake of Ronnie Milsap's, "No Getting Over Me." A very pleasant surprise for me. Not changing much of anything and honestly, how could you? This song is a classic and they did it proud. The vocals are perfect.

With an awesome country rockin' sound we hear, "Boys Like Us" and "Let's Get Dirty." "Too Country" also rocks but has a funky little rift at the beginning that sets the tone for some great talk of what makes a country boy cool. You'll love this fast paced song as you can't help but to toe tap and sing along.

While listening to "Freebird In A Firebird" I couldn't help but to notice the influence Lynryd Skynryd has had on the band. It was more than just the lyrics that mention, "Freebird," the guitar work sounded like pure Skynrd. Maybe this is the song Skynyrd's new guitar player Mark Matejka helped out on? The song is about two old friends that unexpectedly meet-up and talk about days gone by. A great reminder of all the fun we used to have as teenagers.

I really enjoyed this new CD and I look forward to seeing these guys live. Rumor has it they really have a high energy show and if this album is any indication of that, they're gonna be around for awhile. Do your country collection a favor and pick this one up soon.
